Iris Pro 5200 - Cities Skylines crashes Intel driver

Hello,

I have a problem running Cities Skylines on my device with a Core i7-4770HQ and Iris Pro Graphics 5200 (Vaio Z Canvas, 16GB RAM, Windows 10).

When playing the game and moving the camera / changing the perspective the Intel driver very often crashes. The driver gets restarted very quickly but after a few crashes I get a notification that the access to the graphics hardware for Cities Skylines has been blocked and then of course the game stopps completely working.

I reduced the texture quality from high to medium and that helped and that helped alot but from time to time it still crashes. But texture quality shouldn't be a problem because I can play the game (with textures set to high) without problem on a device with HD Graphics 4000.

I tested with the system manufacturers driver and latest stable as well as beta graphics driver but the problem persists.

Description:

See above, with texture quality set to high --> happens always (depends on loaded savegame/city size)

Texture quality set to medium --> sporadic

Hardware:

As above: Vaio Z Canvas, 16 GB RAM, Core i7-4770HQ, integrated Iris Pro Graphics 5200

Happens booth when playing on internal as well as external display (connected via DP) or in window mode of the game.

Hardware Stepping: see attachment

Software:

Windows 10 Pro x64 build 10586

Graphics driver version: 20.19.15.4424

Cities: Skylines 1.4.1-f2 (newest), After Dark DLC

Configurations:

Single display

1920*1200, 60 Hz or 2560*1704, 60 Hz

AC & DC

How to reproduce:

Run the game and set the texture qualitiy to high in the settings. The higher the other quality settings, the more it's likely that the driver crashes but it seems that texture quality has the biggest impact.

Load/play a savegame with - I assume - a bigger population (~100k+) on the map and rotate/move the camera over the city.

Thanks.

I just tested it again with the vanilla game and even with all qualitiy settings set to high it only happens sporadic.

So I assume it has more to do with the ammount of different buildings/assetss that are loaded on the map, not just the pure ammount.

Because each different building has it's own texture that needs to be loaded into the RAM. So I think the more different buildings/assets are loaded the faster the driver crashes. I'm using a lot of different buildings/assets from the Steam-Workshop so that may be the cause that the driver crashes every few seconds for me.

Hello, st0rmi:

My apologies on the delay for this, we are currently attempting to replicate this behavior from Intel® Iris™ Pro Graphics 5200.

Just to double check, are you still experiencing this issue?

I will keep you posted on my findings with this.

I am sorry to hear that st0rmi, but lets perform some troubleshooting to gather up more important information that will give us a clearer overview of this scenario.

Would like to recommend you to test previosly released drivers in order to check the behavior of your system while using them.

*Drivers to be tested:

15.40.18.4380 // https://downloadcenter.intel.com/download/25860/Intel-Graphics-Driver-for-Windows-10-15-40-4th-Gen-?product=81493 https://downloadcenter.intel.com/download/25860/Intel-Graphics-Driver-for-Windows-10-15-40-4th-Gen-?product=81493

Beta 15.40.12.4326 // https://downloadcenter.intel.com/download/25541/Intel-Beta-Graphics-Driver-for-Windows-10-and-Windows-7-8-1-15-40-?product=81493 https://downloadcenter.intel.com/download/25541/Intel-Beta-Graphics-Driver-for-Windows-10-and-Windows-7-8-1-15-40-?product=81493

15.40.10.4300 // https://downloadcenter.intel.com/download/25489/Intel-Graphics-Driver-for-Windows-10-15-40-4th-Gen-?product=81493 https://downloadcenter.intel.com/download/25489/Intel-Graphics-Driver-for-Windows-10-15-40-4th-Gen-?product=81493

If you have issues while installing them, please use the manual installation of the drivers explained here: http://www.intel.com/content/www/us/en/support/graphics-drivers/000005629.html http://www.intel.com/content/www/us/en/support/graphics-drivers/000005629.html

Another driver to be tested would be the basic driver from windows, this can be tested after uninstalling the current driver.

-Access the device manager (you can use windows start search to find it).

-Look for Display adapters double click on it.

-Right click on your Intel® HD Graphics and hit properties.

-Go to driver tab and hit uninstall.

-Select "Delete the driver software for this device"

Hope you can perform those tests, please keep me posted.

The download for the driver v15.40.18.4380 currently doesn't seem to work but the other drivers above give the same result.

I also tried to test the basic Windows driver but then the game runs so slow that it's unuseable and I couldn't really test it.

Any news for a possible fix?

Hi, st0rmi:

Sorry for the delayed answer, I was getting the game and looking for the nearest configuration to be used.

I went ahead and started playing the game with high settings, I got some lag while playing. Then changed to medium settings and got better performance.

Please note I started the game from scratch so it was a small city.

I am not aware if there is the possibility to "share" your cities by sending the saved games, this is to have the nearest scenario to yours (you have noted this happens in cities with a lot of "activity")

If there is another way to achieve this, like in-game options that have pre-loded cities, please let me know (I was not able to find it in the game I used).

I added some of the documentation gathered up from the tests performed, so you can check it out.

Please take into consideration that this is a CPU instensive game, and having the Intel GPU active to play the game gives more load to the CPU, which may be the source of this behavior.

Any additional information that you may have to further test this, would be great to have, and I am more than willing to continue with the tests.

Hello,

yes it is possible to share savegames. The best way is to use the Steam workshop, that way also all the needed assets can be 'downloaded' with one click.

I picked a savegame from the Steam workshop that will maybe show the issue.

Subscribe to the savegame: http://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=628720796 Steam Workshop :: New Town

Subscribe to required assets & mods: http://steamcommunity.com/workshop/filedetails/?id=628484363 Steam Workshop :: New Town (click the 'subscribe all' button above the list)

Edit: You will also need the "After Dark" DLC addon: http://store.steampowered.com/app/369150 Cities: Skylines - After Dark on Steam

Start the game, go to content manager and enable all the mods (the 3 default ones 'Hard Mode', 'Unlimited Money' & 'Unlock All' are not needed)

Load the 'New Town' savegame and do some more rapid camera moves.

Another more extreme example would be this savegame: http://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=680234630 Steam Workshop :: Nevan City with this collection http://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=679988520 http://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=679988520 but since others are having problems to run the game with it I don't know if it will work.

Important is to leave the texture quality at high, everything else can be left at medium settings (I've set shadows to low and disabled Anisotropic Filtering, Anti-aliasing, Depth of Field and Film grain [slider to the far left]).

Again, the higher the settings, the faster the issue appears but texture quality has the biggest impact.

Also recently I accidentally played the game again with textures set at high and the driver was not crashing but the game was producing a lot of glitches like this:

Hi, st0rmi:

Thank you for letting me know about that.

I have another version of the game, so please provide me with some time in order to check if I can get my hands on the Steam version, and then be able to perform the testing with the same scenario you have :).

As soon as I get a resolution for this, I will let you know.
