problem with VGA port HD 4400

I have a Lenovo z50-70 laptop with an Intel HD 4400 and an nvidia 820M.

the CPU is an i7 4510U @ 2.60GHz and 16GB of RAM, and my OS is Windows 10 Home 64bit.

I am experiencing problems when I plug in an external monitor via the VGA port on the laptop.

the monitor will constantly flicker on and off every 2-15 seconds. this does not happen when a

screen is plugged in through HDMI. I have tried with several different screens and it is always

the same, the screen will flicker off and on when connected to the VGA port.

I have tried updating both the drivers for the geforce 820M and the drivers for the intel 4400 and the problem persists

(I tried the latest version as well as the recent beta version).

I ended up downgrading the drivers to the version currently offered for the laptop on the lenovo website

http://support.lenovo.com/es/es/products/laptops-and-netbooks/lenovo-z-series-laptops/lenovo-z50-70/downloads/DS103952 http://support.lenovo.com/es/es/products/laptops-and-netbooks/lenovo-z-series-laptops/lenovo-z50-70/downloads/DS103952

but the problem remains. is there any way to fix this, or do I have to wait until this is addressed in a possible driver update?

EDIT: in case it isn't clear in the post, the monitor that flickers is the external monitor plugged in via VGA port. the laptop's display

has no problems whatsoever.

Hello, LucasFox:

Thank you for contacting the Intel Communities.

I would like to know, have you tested the system using different cables?

-When did the issue started?

-Was it present in previous uses of the VGA port to get an external display?

-Is this happening with another computer that also uses the VGA port? (using the tested monitors with your computer).

-Have you tested the system with the default drivers from Windows 10*? **

-Have you tried using different resolutions from the graphics control panel?

**You can get the default drivers after uninstalling the current drivers from the device manager.

Different things could be causing this issue: drivers, the port, the cable, the monitor, hope these questions help us to find out what could be the possible source of the issue.

I look forward to your reply.

Esteban C

Hi Esteban,

I have the exact same problem as reported by LucasFox.

My laptop is a Lenovo Z50-70 i5-4210U running Windows 8.1 64-bit.

To answer the questions you asked:

  • I have had this issue ever since I bought the laptop
  • Yes
  • I don't know what you mean, but I experienced this problem with different monitors and different cables, so I'm pretty sure it's a problem with the port itself (or its drivers)
  • No (but I'm pretty sure I never updated the drivers in the first place)
  • No (I stick to 1920x1080)

My driver is version 10.18.14.4264 from 4-8-2015.

Any suggestions would be highly appreciated. Thanks!

Hello, basdijkstra:

Have you tested this with the drivers from Lenovo?

http://support.lenovo.com/us/en/products/laptops-and-netbooks/lenovo-z-series-laptops/lenovo-z50-70?tabName=Downloads&linkTrack=Mast:SubNav:Support:Drivers%20and%20Software|Drivers%20and%20Software&beta=false Laptops-and-netbooks :: Lenovo-Z-Series-laptops :: Lenovo-Z50-70 - Lenovo Support (US)

Generic drivers from Intel: https://downloadcenter.intel.com/download/25978/Intel-Graphics-Driver-for-Windows-7-8-1-15-36-?product=81497 Download Intel® Graphics Driver for Windows 7*/8.1* [15.36]

NOTE: While using OEM systems like yours, the recommendation is to download and install the drivers from your computer's manufacturer website.

This is to avoid losing any special features or settings while using the generic drivers from Intel®.

Another step to test would be to start your system in safe mode, by doing this, default drivers are going to be loaded, if you get the issue with that, we could that the issue is the port.

Here some instructions to do this: http://www.digitalcitizen.life/5-ways-boot-safe-mode-windows-8-windows-81 http://www.digitalcitizen.life/5-ways-boot-safe-mode-windows-8-windows-81

Hi Esteban,

thank you for your answer. In the meantime, I have tried the solution as has been described here:

https://support.lenovo.com/nl/nl/documents/HT104459 External screen flickering or blinking when connected by VGA port - ThinkPad E550 - Lenovo Support (NL)

And the situation seems to have improved a lot so far. I see a lot less flickering and blinking (nearly none at all anymore) so I'm happy.
