DPTF Event ID 256, Windows 10

    n8turepix

This error event happens regularly on a Windows 10 Dell XPS 15:

The description for Event ID 256 from source DPTF cannot be found. Either the component that raises this event is not installed on your local computer or the installation is corrupted. You can install or repair the component on the local computer.

If the event originated on another computer, the display information had to be saved with the event.

The following information was included with the event:

Intel(R) Dynamic Platform and Thermal Framework

      ESIF(8.1.10600.147) TYPE: ERROR

      DPTF Build Version: 8.1.10600.147

      DPTF Build Date: May 26 2015 13:35:22

      Source File: ..\..\..\Sources\Manager\EsifApplicationInterface.cpp @ line 737

      Executing Function: DptfEvent

      Message: Received unexpected event

      Framework Event: DptfResume [3]

the message resource is present but the message is not found in the string/message table

Hopefully someone with access to the code can add a description for the error and fix it as well.

      Thanks.

Please bear in mind that Intel does not provide drivers for Dell computers. I recommend checking for updated drivers here: Support | Dell US

And yet there seems to be a disconnect somewhere, because I've recently purchased a Alienware 17 R3, which includes Intel technology and drivers, and have extensively been attempting to debug/trouble-shoot/fix this on-going issue with Intel/Dell drivers and Windows 10. Either your company wants our assistance in rooting out these BSOD crashes, or you don't. I've no issues with taking my $1000s elsewhere. Do you care or not? I asked Dell the same question, and at this point - it looks like this machine (Alienware 17 R3) is about to go back to its maker. Why? Because I'm experiencing a BSOD issue that involves Intel.

I'm an advance computer user, build my own computers, etc. I've ran diagnostic tools and swapped out hardware to ensure it's not hardware based; all tests point to this being a software issue.

In any event, here's a copy of my log from Windows 10 (factory restored version, AND after Windows 10 64-bit, have updated to latest Windows 10 build):

This is the classic fingerpointing that happens with the OEM production model.  Intel blames Dell; Dell blames Intel, and nothing gets done.  Both Intel and Dell are very big, profitable companies that should swallow their pride and work together to fix what looks like a simple driver bug.  There is no excuse for not writing a description for an event log code.  At least we would then have a hint to what the problem is.  The result of this dysfunctional behavior by both parties is that thousands of users waste time because the bug causes a problem on our machines.  It is why Apple's market value is $519 billion, and Intel's market value is a quarter of that.  I used to work in those industries, and a bug like this is typically a four-hour job to fix.  Instead, thousands of hours are lost, month after month, due to pride and egoism on the part of the chipmaker and OEM.

                Intel Tech Support,

Can you please at least acknowledge this thread was reviewed? These errors continue to plague multiple laptop systems - why? We're trying to assist you with resolving issues with your hardware/software product. I can always take my money elsewhere if you don't give a #$#$#. I'm beyond frustrated w/ my time lost over trying to fix this one on my own - I shouldn't have to fix YOUR driver issues. Here's some more examples to chew on:

It is disappointing that Dell and Intel don't take issues like this more seriously.  I just bought a $3k Alienware 17R3, and it has crashed over 100 times in the last two weeks.  I have never seen a more unstable laptop, and this is brand new and right out of the box.  I want to keep this laptop more than anything, but I am not going to risk owning a $3k paperweight.  So both Intel and Dell can have their buggy technology back before my 21-day return period ends.

This is the official download page at Intel. If you do not find the driver you are looking for at Drivers & Software, you need to contact your computer manufacturer for driver availability.

                      Allan_intel,

Can you tell us anything more than that? Is it not possible for us to collaborate with Intel directly regarding this issue? It's currently affecting Delll, HP, Asus, and other Windows 10 based products. Same issue. Same error.

Can you provide more information as to why all of us have to go through our computer's manufacturer for driver availability issues, when it's a Intel hardware/software issue being reported by Windows event log? Maybe that'll help us comprehend the process and why you keep redirecting us away from pursuing Intel for answers to our issues.

                        I completely agree with Syric,

This is a major issue which is affecting any PC of any brand. I have a Asus laptop S500CA with an intel core i3 and the above error appear at least 10 times a day on top of other errors which freezes my laptop. This issue start happening since I update to Win10 from Win 8.1. A fresh re-install of Win10 didn't solve the issue either.

I have contact Asus and they have no solution to fix this issue, rather then have the laptop back for repairing at my expenses !

Obviously there is nothing wrong with my laptop HW as it was working perfectly with Win 8.1 before the upgrade. I am also convinced that the issue lies on the hardware /software compatibility with the new Win10 and current generation of processors. The only option I have is to go back to Win 8.1 until  the 'big' ones decide to tackle the issue together.

Please keep in mind that Original Equipment Manufacturers (OEMs) can add, remove, alter or change features in the controller drivers according to their system designs.

                          Allan.

You're stuck in Dell's products. However there is at least one more post proving that this is a wrong approach...

And to make it worst I also have the same problem with my HP Pavilion x360 laptop.

So, if you (Intel) don't provide drivers, my suggestion is to give to these companies the right hardware specifications so, they can build the appropriate drivers!

Thank you for your feedback, as you know, companies like Dell or HP may alter features with Intel drivers.

                              Allan.

I'm having the same problem on my HP Pavilion as well.  What I think is very interesting here (perhaps out of my own ignorance) is that the version and build date are all the same on everyone's complaints, including mine.   Version 8.1.10600.147   Build date of May 26, 2015

                                  Dear Intel Support,

this problem doens't relate only to "DELL" or other OEMs...same problem on an ASUS F550LB and on self-assembled computer with a --> Intel motherboard and Intel CPU...

Of course I installed the latest Intel Rapid-Storage-Technology drivers. After the following error massages, shown in the eventvwr.exe both computers freeze...no further entries possible.

After upgrading Windows 8.1  (never got freezes like this with 8.1, or similar issues) to 10... happiness is gone...

I am also having issues with the DPTF 8.1.10600.147 driver on a Dell XPS 15 9530.  When the driver is installed it seems to only run in LPM, regardless of Windows Power Options, thus disabling Turbo Boost on the system and seriously limiting performance.  The CPU never clocks higher than 2.28 GHz on i7 4712hq with the driver installed.

I've been in contact with Dell and they have gone as far as replacing my main board and hard drive but the exact same thing happens.  They suggested I try a DPTF driver from the new XPS, 605.221.  I can get Turbo Boost with this driver however the system seems to be constantly power throttling when using this driver.  The CPU on the newer systems have a TDP of 47 while the 4712 is rated at 37 so maybe that is why the CPU constantly power throttles with this version of the driver.

It would be ideal if Dell and Intel could get together and work this out.  From what I understand, Dell gets these drivers from Intel pretty much as is.  If we get this escalated on both sides then maybe we can finally get a working resolution.  I know this issue also affects users of the Dell Precision M3800.
