Intel HD Graphics driver installs older driver than specified in driver description.

I'm trying to install the latest Intel Driver for 3rd Gen Core processors (version 15.33.42.4358), but the installer (which I am 100% sure is the correct one, for Win 7 64-bit) ends up installing version 10.18.10.4358. Is this intended? My idea for why this may be occurring is that the driver package recognizes, for whatever reason, my laptop is not compatible with the very latest version and defaults to the last known compatible driver that exists in the same package.

My system: Sager NP9150 (Clevo P150EM rebranded), Windows 7 64-bit, I7-3610QM, AMD HD 7970M, 16GB DDR3 RAM. This system uses AMD Switchable graphics technology (Enduro).

Hello TrantaLocked,

Thank you for joining the Intel communities.

Please reply with your graphics report:

Go to Intel® Graphics and Control Panel > Options > information Center > Save.

Or you can check the following link to get the report:

http://www.intel.com/content/www/us/en/support/graphics-drivers/000005848.html Intel® Graphics Driver Report for Graphics Drivers

Also, I will appreciate if you can post the msinfo32.

  1. Please press Windows Key + R to open the Run Menu
  2. Type msinfo32 and click OK
  3. While viewing the System Summary node go to File then Save (Please do not use Export)
  4. Save your MSINFO32 report as msinfo32.nfo on your desktop for easy access and then you can post it here.

Best regards,

Ivan

Are you trying to install the driver from your system manufacturer or from the Intel website?

The driver for this 3rd generation processor is available at the following link:

https://downloadcenter.intel.com/download/25698/Intel-HD-Graphics-Driver-for-Windows-7-8-1-10-3rd-Gen-BYT- Download Intel® HD Graphics Driver for Windows 7*, 8.1*, 10 (3rd Gen & BYT)

If this driver does not work, I suggest installing the driver from your system manufacturer website or contact them for assistance; Intel provides generic versions of drivers for general purposes. Your computer manufacturer may have altered the features, incorporated customizations, or made other changes to your driver. Intel recommends you contact your computer manufacturer for the latest system specific updates and technical support information.

The latest manufacturer driver is from late 2012, which is why I feel uncomfortable sticking with it. The driver installed now is from December 2015 which is fine for me, but I'm still confused as to why the installer in installing an older than specified driver. Yes, that is the link I got my driver package from, but I initially used the Intel Update Utility and it did the same thing, installing the older driver version..

Were you able to install the driver I suggested?

The one from Intel's website? That is the link I was already using. It installs, but with an older driver than specified (10.18.10.4358 rather than 15.33.42.4358).

Try updating all of the drivers from your system manufacturer and then uninstalling the older graphics driver restart your system and then reinstall the driver, reinstall the driver manually using the ZIP file, you can follow the steps here:

http://www.intel.com/content/www/us/en/support/graphics-drivers/000005469.html Error Message: Computer Manufacturer Graphics Driver Detected

You can download the ZIP file for the driver at the following link:

10.18.10.4358 and 15.33.42.4358 are the same.

Relevant (for consumers) is only the four-digit number.

The other numbers (PC_Release_Major, PC_Release_Minor,branch?) are somewhere described here at Intel, but i forgot the link.

Here you go:

/message/234852# 234852 Why does an Intel graphics driver have two version numbers associated with it?

Ivan,

I have a video footage of me going through the driver updating process.

Different aspects of the Intel driver system on the Windows platform (at least on some versions) seem to get confused with the different types of version number used. This is plain to see when you view in the video I am uploading, where I basically bitch and moan about how it's impossible to get the latest drivers installed on Windows 10.

You DEFINITELY have a problem with your drivers in Windows 10. So, if you're making loads of fixes, be aware that a ton of users are quite possibly not getting them because of this problem.

Another aspect (again, it's documented in my video), was that because of the version number confusion, the driver update tool kept downloading a version of drivers which said in the description text that it was for '3rd Generation core processors'. Eventually, I navigated around the issue and brute forced it somehow.

I don't have time to spend on this right now, but you need to raise it as an issue for you guys to look into urgently. There are thousands of forum posts around the internet in various communities where people are having problems installing your drivers.

If you have problems installing our drivers it is important to have in mind that using drivers from the Intel website not necessarily will work properly as branded computers are custom products that have proprietary designs and therefore they need proprietary drivers as well.

The best recommendation we can give you is to make sure you are using the latest driver for your laptop to work with Windows 10 available from the Clevo web site.

You can try our driver but if the problem persists I would say this is a compatibility problem.

Replete, did Stefan3D's post explain your problem (as it did for mine), or are you having a separate issue? The Intel Update utility does indeed confuse itself with the driver version numbers, thinking you have an older version and offering to download the latest even though you already have it.

I'm sorry this is an issue with the Intel® Driver Update Utility and it has been already reported to our engineering department in order to be corrected.

I apologize for any inconvenience.

Best wishes,

Ivan

I'd already figured out that the last four digits are what matches the driver release. This doesn't really help, because the updating software and windows gets confused about which version is the latest.

The actual answe is simply that Intel have a ridiculous versioning system based on minor patch build number that results in both the operating system and their own driver updating software being unable to correctly determine the ACTUAL latest version.

Whoever at Intel came up with that idea needs a pineapple inserting into their rear end for wasting thousands of hours of humanity's collective time.

"Dear SupportUser, actually version 15.x is the same as 10.x". - paraphrased from @stefan3d's link

Oh of course Intel, that makes total sense, and of course everyone in the industry follows this practice. /s

If you want to differentiate the type/version of DirectX, OS, and architecture of a driver, the place to do it is NOT IN THE VERSION NUMBER.

This is good news!

Now, as a support administrator, it is your duty is to prevent any future customers from experiencing this confusion and waste of time.

  1. Update relevant threads to this issue (including this one) with an accepted answer that acknowledges this bug.
  2. Share this knowledge with other support technicians. Do you have a support knowledgebase that people like you use? It needs to be there to prevent the spread of misinformation.
  3. If you're feeling extra zealous, you could suggest to someone with authority that some kind of public bug list is created, and made accessible (not hidden within this crazy forum system that I had to Google hard for).
    1. This will save people's time
    2. This will prevent frustration and therefore impact the Intel brand less
    3. I will send you a medal

Phil
