How are you connecting the camera to the base shield? The UART output of the base shield has to be connected to a resistor that goes to the UART pins of the camera. The camera also has to be properly powered. You need to power the camera using 5VDC.

That was the original link that I looked at. As far as I knew did the base shield not output 5V DC? Whenever I covered the light sensor, the infrared LED's on the side would glow up. I was not able to get my hands on two 10k resistors. Can it be done without the resistors?
Side question: Is the gpio programming in Linux on the Edison similar to the gpio programming on Galileo (running Linux off an SD)? I am used to working with that.

I’ve never tried to use the Base shield without resistors. I’ve seen other users that have worked with the base shield without the resistors so try without the resistors and let us know your results.
And yes, the GPIO programming is very similar in the Edison, take a look at Intel® Edison Kit for Arduino* Hardware Guide for Boards and Kits
