I'm shopping for motherboards for that will use Intel processors but can find no correlation between the specific i3, i5, i7 intel processors and the socket types listed for the motherboards. Is there a list somewhere of the socket types that each intel processor requires.

Interesting question. You can use the http://ark.intel.com/Search/Advanced ARK | Processor Feature Filter to select a socket (7th box down on the left) and then see the processors supported by that socket.

Wow, that's like just the opposite of what I was looking for. Why can't Intel just put the socket type along with the rest of the specifications of a processor? Start with a socket and see whether is supports the processor you want, that's just backwards. I know what processor I'm shopping for, a 6 gen i7, why do I have to run thru a litany of sockets find what the socket type is for a 6 gen i7, which by the way is not listed in the link you referred me to. Putting the socket type in with the specifications of the processor just seems natural, I know Motorola did it with its processors, and it seems every semiconductor manufacturer includes the case specs for the device. Why is Intel backwards on this and it makes using their stuff so unnecessarily confusing. Just put the freakin socket type in with the specifications for the processor package.

The socket is already listed in the processor specifications. Using the i7-4771 as an example, look under "package specifications":
