To be able to tell whatCPU is compatible or not we need to know what motherboard you have.
your cpu is too old to upgrade. you have to switch to an new system, for example with a core 2 duo processor. you will find many cheap boards and cpu-models from intel that give you a boost in comparison to your celeron sys..
"your cpu is too old to upgrade." I disagree if he wants top upgrade of course he can, i recently upgraded a P3!!!
"you have to switch to an new system," not tru, he doesnt HAVE to at all.
"ou will find many cheap boards and cpu-models from intel that give you a boost in comparison to your celeron sys.." yes very true
i didn't know they are still selling them brand new..
If oyu know where to look....maybe not brand spanking new but near enough
Intel Motto is "Leap Ahead"
even you get a new set of computer. it will last you down the road and it will be able to work 10 times more powerful that your Celeron 566Mhz
Thanks for the responses, motherboard model and extra info listed below:
Motherboard model = Compaq 0588h
Motherboard Chipset = Intel 810E (Whitney) + ICH
motherboard slots = 4xPCI
Anyways, the desktop will be replaced in two years but it's gotten pretty slow (due to software becoming more advanced, not virus' etc.) so until then it does need a 'refresh'.
If I'm reading this, http://www.tech-forums.net/computer/topic/19763.html, right then the socket info is:" CPU Slot/Socket Type : Socket 370 FC-PGA " does that mean that I can get any intel CPU as long as it fulfills that socket type? (looking on ebay I'll assume my limit is 1.2Ghz).
Does it have to be a Celeron or can I get a P3?
