If you are using the latest Windows 10 ISO, the installation will fail. You should be able to install Windows using the 10240 ISO. You can download the Media Creation Tool for this version from https://www.microsoft.com/en-US/software-download/windows10. After downloading the tool: right click on the exe, click properties, go to the details tab, and make sure the file version is 10.0.10240.16480.
This should give you a bootable version of Windows. Install the latest drivers using the Intel Driver Update Utility and install the latest BIOS. You should then be able to install the Windows (10586 aka 1151) update using Windows Update.
You must select Fat32 for format, not NTFS. The boot menu didn't see the flash drive when formatted as NTFS and I had to remake it as Fat32. I did the install of the previous version of Windows 10 today and my ICS is again functional. It did pick up the previous activation key as well. Now to stop the update from applying until a fix is available.
In this case, we recommend following the Windows® 10 Upgrade Instructions that Intel recommend upgrading the Intel® Compute Stick from Windows 8.1 to Windows 10.
Before doing the upgrade I recommend updating the BIOS to the latest version, you can follow the BIOS update instructions here:
Also, if you system does not work at all after trying to do the upgrade, try the following:
Make sure you have the latest BIOS version.
In this case I recommend doing a BIOS recovery and you can follow the steps at the following link:
After that is done, reset the system to factory defaults:
- Remove any SD card, if installed.
- Press F8 when you see this prompt during boot: F8 to Activate Windows 8.1* Recovery Mode.
- Select Troubleshoot.
- Select Reset your PC, then select Next.
- Select just remove my files.
- Select Reset to start the restore process.
