My CPU is being thermally throttled.

So I am just looking for guidance. I just bought a I7 6700k and noticed it wasn't benching at the reference speeds on CPUZ. I have an aftermarket ZAHAL heat sink installed.

Here are the thermals while running Prime 95.

The hot spot for 14nm Intel CPUs is tiny. It is possible that your heat sink is missing it if it uses heat tubes. Look at the below article and pay attention to the size of the Intel hot spot (but realize that the photo is old and represents a 22nm Ivy Bridge). Then translate the orientation to your motherboard and heat sink. You might be better off if your heat sink is rotated 90 degrees, if that's possible.

Thanks for the link! I'll try this out. Wont be for a while though I've had my computer apart 3 times today changing out thermal paste.

Hi Redmond91,

You are getting high temperatures but, take in mind you are over clocking; the Processor Base Frequency is 4.0GHz and with Max Turbo Frequency is 4.2 GHz. According to your test the processor is running at 4.308GHz (The 4 Cores running at 4.3GHz)

There's no doubt that overclocking increases temperatures. No doubt about it. However, I have an i5-2500K / DZ68BC with a Noctua NH-C12P SE14 with minimal overclocking (set to Automatic, so max CPU is 3.8, one more than the usual maximum). I just ran IPDT and the final maximum temperature was "48 degrees C below maximum" (the starting maximum is 65 below). The combination of my cooler and the larger (32 nm) hot spot keeps my CPU far below throttle territory. I think Intel needs to write an article similar to the aforementioned Tom's Hardware one explaining how to mitigate the smaller hot spot.

Yeah, does anyone think it could be my processor causing this instead of the heat sink?
