S2600WT2 BMC fails to renew dhcp address

Hi there,

we have a number of S2600WT2 servers and on occasion some (few) of them fail to renew their IP address via DHCP, e.g. after having restarted the dhcp server for maintenance. This is particularly annoying if the node was powered off since I can't reach it in-band, either, and thus lost all ability to control it.

The only failsafe method to recover known to us is to break the physical network link momentarily, which apparently causes the bmc dhcp client to renew its address. Is this a bug in the bmc dhcp client? Has anyone experienced this situation before?

Thanks & cheerio, Harry.

Hello,

To answer your question, this is not a bug on the BMC DHCP client. The behavior is expected since you are using dynamic IP addresses. We recommend setting up reserved static IP addresses to the BMC to avoid this behavior.

Hi Dan,

thanks for taking the time to respond but that's hardly an expected behavior that the udhcp client fails to acquire an IP address from the DHCP server. How is that not a bug?

If it's not a bug and indeed expected behavior, what can be done to force the client to renew its IP address?

Thanks & cheerio, Harry.

You need to install a Intel® System Configuration Utility (syscfg) to server host OS and issue a syscfg /rbmc command with admin rights.

Again, host was powered off so running anything is not an option.

Hello Harry,

Based on the fact we do not have reports of bugs from other customers regarding this issue please make sure that you have the latest firmware on these servers and swap LAN cables for testing. How many systems do you have affected by this issue?

Hi Dan,

the last time it affected 4 out of 25 systems. All of which are running the same firmware - there may have been an update by now... Cables are not the issue.

Cheerio, Harry.

Hello Harry,

At this point our suggestion is contacting our support group directly to replace the boards under warranty:
