The Intel(R) HD Graphics 2000 adapter on my system restricts the system to a resolution of 1366x768 for my (4:3) Samsung SyncMaster 913N LCD monitor which is attached by VGA cable. It has allowed me to define and save a custom 1280x1024 resolution but does not allow it to be used.
System is Dell Optipex 790: Core-i5 2400: Intel(R) HD Graphics 2000 with driver version: 15.28.24.64.4229
I'd be very grateful for any help and ideas.

I had already been through the Display Resolutions Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ), and many other resources, before I posted my question.
This is not an instance of a user that doesn't know how to set a machine up or customise it. The system is clearly malfunctioning; I am looking for someone that has seen this particular malfunction before and knows how to fix it.
