I’d highly suggest you to use the SDK if you want to test the Edison image to develop applications without using the board. Keep in mind that the Intel Edison platform uses U-boot that is not compatible with most of the virtualizer tools, additionally you would have to use the BSP to generate the file system and firmware in the format needed to be mounted it in a Virtual Machine. Once mounted remember that you cannot emulate the peripherals of the board, this means that you can only test generic code that does not require any peripherals.
