    Problem:configuration of 8250/16550 uart driver and its effect on ethernet

      Hi all, I have to configure 8250/16550 driver and intel_quark_uart driver on yocto linux as loadable dynamic modules and then login to my Galileo Gen2 through ssh . After logging in through ssh, I want to modprobe 8250/16550 and intel_quark_uart driver, so that on the runtime I should be able to also login through terminal such as minicom, But the issue that I'm facing is that After configuring 82550/16550 driver as a loadable module, I can't even see the ethernet connectivity to the Board. On doing " nmap -sP <my IP> " on one of the PCs connected in the same network, I don't see the Galileo Gen2 appearing as one of the nodes connected to this network. Is ethernet driver dependent on 8250/16550 serial?? Plz note that as soon as I change the configuration of 8250/16550 driver to static , I can see the Galileo Gen2 as a node appearing over the network and can also login through ssh. So, is the ethernet driver in some way related to 8250/16550 UART-chip driver?? I am attaching the screenshot of the window that will show the changes that I made in the .config file after running " bitbake linux-yocto-quark -c menuconfig " in order to make the drivers as loadable modules.             Hi,

             

            there is a probability that a system stops a booting process (crash, probe problem,etc.). It causes that an ethernet driver is not loaded.

            A reason of the problem may be related with incorrect settings of kernel features (like DMA).

              Another possible problem may be related with grub.conf configuration.

              Have you changed console to ttyQRK1 in grub.conf ?

                Your first reply seems to be the cause of the issue. Even I feel that the Board doesn't boot up, since it hangs in the middle of the boot process. But I have not changed any other Kernel settings other than disabling 8250/16550 driver. How do I come to know which Kernel settings are posing the problem.

                  xbolshe, I have not changed the grub.conf file to contain console=ttyQRK1.For now, it is still set to console=ttyS1. Nevertheless, I have tried to boot the board by completely removing this console=ttyS1 setting, yet the Boot console was visible, and I could see the Board  showing the Boot Process.I'm attaching the snapshot of the point where the Boot Process hangs. The Process hangs at the same place irrespective of whether I keep console=ttyS1 setting or remove it. Do I need to change it to ttyQRK1. But since I have also built the Intel Quark UART driver as a loadable module, I don't think that will solve the issue.Screenshot from 2015-08-26 11:34:09.png

                    Hi,

                     

                    by disabling 8250/16550 driver you have disabled a possibility to see early messages.

                    I think you need to try to use ttyQRK1, because it is a standard name for quark_uart driver.

                     

                    BTW, if you will disable [8250/16550 PCI device support] kernel feature, 8250 driver will work only for early messages.

                      Hi xbolshe,

                       

                      I have tried your approach of using console=ttyQRK1, but unfortunately that too doesn't help for the obvious reason that intel_quark_uart driver is also built as a dynamic module. you're saying that by disabling 8250/16550 driver, I have eliminated the possibility of seeing early message. Yeah, That's what I want. I don't want any console to get enabled at the time of boot. I want to access the Board through ssh after it has booted up completely. Then from there, I want to enable 8250/16550 as well as intel_quark_uart driver, and then I should be able to get access to the terminal console. This is what I want. So, my main concern is -----why does the Board not boot up when I disable 8250/16550 driver?? It should ideally boot up irrespective of enabling/disabling of this serial driver.

                          Yes I have tried removing console and earlycon parameters from grub.conf. It doesn't help. The initial process being followed for the boot doesn't seem to change with changing of these parameters, and the boot process hangs at the same place. And one more point I would like to bring to your notice that -When the Boot Process starts, I see the following---

                          Why does it show /grub-spi.conf , even though I have selected the sd card image to boot?? So, it seems like the /boot/grub/grub.conf file present on the card doesn't matter at all, when it's taking the grub configuration from grub-spi.conf located somewhere, which I don't have any idea about where it's located.

                            grub-spi.conf  means a file stored in SPI flash memory on a board.

                            It is used, when no SD card inserted (red boot screen like shown below).

                              Thanks a lot for your efforts buddy..You're right. The Board boots up without the presence of 8250/16550 driver at all. But at the same time, you have enabled Intel Quark UART driver as a static module, and underneath you have also kept the Support For Console on Intel Quark UART enabled, which means you have still kept the support of ttyQRK* enabled. I would really appreciate this if you could make the board boot by disabling Intel Quark UART driver as well. Thanks again for your efforts ...:)

                                I also tried by disabling Intel Quark UART driver as well. Now, fortunately the Board boots up, and am able to login through ssh. I am not at all sure what went wrong the previous time when I did the same. But now , the things are in place , and the Board is able to show up on the network after booting without the presence of 8250/16550 driver and Intel Quark UART driver. It took me so long to make it work, but am still unsure what happened the last time when I did the same. Thanks xBolshe for your efforts. Your efforts made me try the stuffs again, and make it work...:) Thanks a lot !!!
