    Flashall confusion

    cdude

I'm having problems trying to flash the firmware.

      1. I downloaded the latest image: edison-image-ww25.5-15.zip

      2. Copied the files to the E: drive using windows explorer

      3. Ran "reboot ota" on the edison console

      4. Got an error "Failed to start hostname service"

      5. cat /etc/version returns "edison-weekly_build_56_2014-08-20_15-54-05". I am told the latest is build is 68 and I also need some other fixes from 68.

      6. configure_edison --version returns "Incorrect input. Redirecting to --help"

      7. copied dfu-util.exe to the E: drive

      8. Ran flashall.bat from a windows cmd prompt on the E: drive. Result:

           Using U-boot target: edison-blankrndis

Now waiting for dfu device 8087:0a99

Please plug and reboot the board

      9. Not sure what "plug" means. So I unplug and replug in the two USB cables connected to the Sparkfun base block

      10. Got a dialog about bad files due to disconnection while writing files, do I want to scan? I said no. Result:

The system cannot find the file specified.

The batch file cannot be found.

The batch file cannot be found.

      11. Ran flashall again. Result:

           E:\>flashall.bat

The system cannot find the file specified.

           Using U-boot target: edison-blankrndis

Now waiting for dfu device 8087:0a99

Please plug and reboot the board

The system cannot find the file dfu_error.txt.

( was unexpected at this time.

So what exactly does "plug and reboot" mean? How do I get the image flashed correctly?

          Solved this myself.

          Some better instructions:

          1. Start with the board unplugged

          2. Copy dfu-util.exe to the folder on your PC that has the uncompressed image files

          3. Run flashall.bat from a Windows command prompt in that folder

          4. When it says "plug and reboot", plug in the USB cable(s). You may need to turn on your board.

          5. The board should be detected and you should see lots of activity. Follow any instructions.

What did NOT work for me: the standard instructions where you copy the image files to the root of the Edison drive and type "reboot ota" in the Edison console.

Perfect. Worked like a charm. Thanks.
