Intel Core M-5Y71 Heating

Hello.

First of all I am in no way educated or specialised to judge if this is "overheating" or within the boundaries of acceptable.

Now, I have an Asus Transformer T300 Chi, the "large" one with the Intel Core M-5Y71 Processor, 8 GB RAM and UHD screen. Great laptop/tablet hybrid, I am very pleased with it.

However, even the simplest of games, like Microsoft Mahjong from the Windows Store, sends the processor into a heatwave of doom. It genuinely hurts touching the Asus after 10 minutes of gaming. I do not know whether it is CPU use or graphics use that makes the temperature rise so drastically.

I have tried altering my power settings for CPU and graphics to the least power consuming settings without any change in temperature.

So I am wondering if anyone else have this issue, or if it even is an issue? Can the laptop withstand such heat?

Is there any software that can help me here? Something that can set a max temperature which forces the CPU to regulate its paces before reaching the temperature set.

Any help or good ideas and tips would be greatly appreciated, if not, at least thank you for reading.

Hello jacobhermansen,

Bear in mind that you have what it's call an mid range computer whenever you run games or any high demanding software it could take the system out of the boundaries of the standards.

Does the CPU overheat when you are doing normal tasks'?

Does the system freeze when it overheat?

What I would recommend is running the https://downloadcenter.intel.com/download/19792/Intel-Processor-Diagnostic-Tool-64-bit- Intel® Download Center, if the CPU overheats we will be able to confirm it with this tool.

Could sent us the report from the Intel® Processor Diagnostic Tool, once the the diagnostic is done go to File>View Results File and sent the txt file.

Regards,

Amy.

Hello Amy. Thanks for the response

When doing normal tasks, like surfing, watching videos, typing and such everything runs great, no noticeable heat or freezing.

It only happens when I start a game, even Microsoft Minesweeper can send the processor into a temperature that hurts my hand. Not second degree burns hot, but hot enough to not wanting to touch it ever again.

But no, even with the heat it does not freeze in games, I have never played more than half an hour at a time out of fear for my computers safety and well being.

The Diagnostics test fails at the BaseClock test part. Here is the text file you requested.

Should I run a game for a while and do the test again to test the temperature that way?

Quick update, after 15 minutes of gaming the Diagnostic tool still fails on the BaseClock test part. However the temperature now shows as 7 degrees C below maximum. And it is literally painful to hold your hand on the computer, or using it in tabletmode for that matter. This can't possible be normal. I don't see how this would pass as okay.

Last update from me (Sorry for the spamming). Will await reply starting now.

But I ran a diagnosis more, with the "BaseClock test" disabled. It did a full diagnosis and passed it. Here is the result:

Normally the test will let us know if there might be something wrong with a processor and at this point from the results you provided us the processor failed the test, I can't confirm if there is something defective in the processor, so what I would recommend is to get in contact with the computer manufacturer since the Intel® Core™ M-5Y71 Processor you have is an OEM product.

Regards,

Amy.
