Yes you can turn it on without the stick connected to the TV, all you need is power to the unit.

That's not correct for my stick. Today I have tried with power via the power adapter and not a USB. The unit lights blue, but is not turned on. Despite the fact that I both press and hold the On/Off button nothing happens. The moment I put it in the HDMI input the stick turns on. Once it is in HDMI I can take it out and it stays on, but I am unable to start it without putting it to HDMI.
Does anybody have any tips or experiences, or could someone try to exclude that there is something wrong with my stick?
Sorry for not getting back with you sooner, it took me a while to get to this thread. Anyways, please check your BIOS settings, under configuration, make sure that you have the internal UEFI shell “enabled” this would let you boot without a monitor connected.
