PCIe 3.0 is supposed to be backward compatible according to PCIe standards, but the only way to know for sure however is by testing the card.
Thank you for the reply.
I was just searching on google about compatibility of DP35DP with pci expresss revision 3.0 so I found this thread from intel support community itself:
someone named victor_intel in the above thread said: If the problem continues, this may be an issue with the requirements of the video card as these motherboards do not support PCI Express* 16x revision 3."
But I also found many person using DP35DP motherboard with Pci express 3.0 video cards on internet, for instance this website http://www.userbenchmark.com/ rates system and it's hardware. Many people benchmarked their system on this website and they are using Mobo DP35DP with Pci express 3.0x16 cards such as nvidia gtx 770 , amd radeon hd 7750, amd radeon hd 7850 and so on. Following is the link to such benchmarked systems:
So will it be safe for me to buy pci express 3.0 graphics card since many people are using them on the same mobo which I have? but questions comes in mind why did victor_intel on intel support community said the DP35DP doesn't support 3.0x16 cards?
I'm confused please help me here. All the latest cards only comes with pci 3.0 support I couldn't find a new card which comes with pci 2.0 support.
What happens is that this board does not have PCIe Gen 3.0 but rather a PCIe Gen 2.0, so this means that this board is not made to work with a graphics card running a PCIe 3.0 card, therefore such a configuration is not supported, which basically means that it is not up to the motherboard to run this type of card.
However the PCI standards are supposed to be backward compatible, so a 3.0 card may still work on this board but with limitations.
Currently I'm using on my DP35DP's pci express 1.0X16's slot Amd Radeon 5670 which is pci express 2.1X16 card. If my motherboard can support 2.1X16 in 1.0X16 slot it should also support 3.0X16 card?
Also, I've given you link above where people are using DP35DP with pci express 3.0X16 cards without limitations. How I come to know this is through checking various benchmarks of motherboards which has pci 3.0X16 slots and which has pci 1.0X16 slots.
Following are links to two different motherboards using same Nvidia gtx770 [MSI(1462 2825) 2GB] (pci express 3.0X16 card) in their pci express slots
This motherboard MSI X79A-GD45 Plus has pci express 3.0X16 slot.
This motherboard is DP35DP which has pci express 1.0X16 slot.
The first link shows the graphics card Nvidia gtx 770 which is pcie 3.0x16 scored scored 56.5% on the pci express 3.0X16 slot of MSI X79A-GD45 Plus and the second link shows that it scored 60.8% on the pci express 1.0X16 slot of DP35DP. So obviously Pcie 1.0X16 slot of DP35DP is not limiting the performance of the pci 3.0X16 cards in any way whatsoever, as proved from these benchmarks.
In the other comment I posted a link where a user had compatibility issues with pcie 3.0 card on DP35DP so how come one DP35DP supports pcie 3.0 and others don't? are there difference in these motherboards which are same in model number which is DP35DP?
For the sake of clarity. I have two systems. On the one I have motherboard which has pcie 2.0 slot and on other system I have DP35DP which has pcie 1.0X16 slot. I used my Amd radeon 5670 which is pcie 2.1X16 on both of them and checked how it performs on both and either of them showed equal results in benchmark of graphics card.
Pcie 3.0 is backwards compatible with Pcie 2.0 and pcie 1.X so these cards may work on these board models… or they may not.
According to these benchmarks, it seems like your video cards are not using Pcie 3.0 to its full potential, if they were , you will definitely see performance being affected since it is supposed to double the communication speed of 2.0. This would be a PCIe issue and not a card or mother problem.
