This is a known issue. Hopefully it will be fixed in future releases. For the moment, the only way to access the Edison is through the IP address.
The actual issue is that mdnsresponder only binds to the USB network connection. I had the same issue and resolved it by;
1. Pointing to alex's repositry (so dependancies would download)
2. Install avahi package - which does the same as mdnsresponder but binds to all interfaces.
Google a previous post where I explain the whole thing (sorry - just about to head off to work so can't be more explicit)
Also the .local is part of the mdnsresponder 'protocol' - google is your friend!
I tried to install Avahi. It needs intltool.
I tried to istall intltool. It cant find the XML::Parser
I installed EXPAT. It still cant find the XML::Parser.
Can someone help me ?
Did you follow the forum instructions to point to Alex's repository - then it should install dependancies automatically.
Yes just this minute i finished installing it and its running! Now the next steps.
Do i have to take further steps? Edison.local is still not working.
I'm searching for a solution. The Avahi service is running.
One more thing: Ping Edison.local works in the Terminal (as before):
PING Edison.local (192.168.2.15): 56 data bytes
64 bytes from 192.168.2.15: seq=0 ttl=64 time=0.363 ms
64 bytes from 192.168.2.15: seq=1 ttl=64 time=0.326 ms
64 bytes from 192.168.2.15: seq=2 ttl=64 time=0.329 ms
64 bytes from 192.168.2.15: seq=3 ttl=64 time=0.334 ms
But 192.168.2.15 is the adress of the USB Ethernet. And from my notebook i can reach 192.168.2.15 but not Edison.local.
Stopping avahi-daemon.service the ping does not work anymore.
Been thinking about this most of the day and have come up with a theory.
Firstly shutting down avahi means that it is probably handling the mdnsresponder protocol - this is a good thing.
You may need to check the ahavi config file and see if it is binding to all adapters - when I get home I will post my config file. You will probably have to restart avahi if you play with the config - check avahi wiki
