When you are changing SATA mode to AHCI, it would represent hardware change. This is just not part of the drivers supported features. In other words, when switching SATA modes you are required to reinstall the operating system.

Second, what would be the viability of installing a USB external drive to replicate the effect of having an AHCI drive? Is this even feasible?
Attaching an external USB drive emulates hot swap feature only, Native Command Queuing (NCQ) is not replicated.
