I have been using a LifeLine SS4200-E for over a year with 2 Western Digital 1TB drives in a Raid1. The unit has been very reliable and other than some firmware upgrades it has worked like a champ.
I still have 600GB's of disk space available but looking for advice on adding two more 1TB drives and making the unit a Raid5. Can this be done?
I would start with the unit off and add 2 drives. Will the NAS move from Raid1 to Raid5 with live data?
No, you can't do that kind of upgrade. If you started with four originally, you can go from RAID 5 to RAID 10; but that's the only live update supported. You would have to back up the data somewhere else, build a new RAID 5, then restore the data onto it.
