I found in the Intel Edison, Galileo & Galileo Gen 2 Shield Testing Report a section for this shield. I will recommend you to check it, it is in page 38. According to the test report it is Galileo/Edison compatible, but it was tested using I2C interface instead of SPI. I don't have the shield to test it using the SPI interface but I encourage you to try using the I2C interface instead. You might get better results.
Another thing you can try is to configure the SPI through the Linux terminal. Please check this thread: Adafruit BMP183 SPI Barometric Pressure & Altitude Sensor with Intel Arduino IDE. It is about a user who wanted to use a shield with SPI interface. At the beginning he had some issues with it although the library compiled fine, so he configured the SPI pins through the Linux terminal and the shield worked. You could try the same approach; it might work for your shield in the same way.
I followed the I2C interface from the report above and it works.
Thanks a lot!!!
