Edison bare module - 5v VSYS?

So say I want to power a Edison bare module (or an Edison on a GPIO block) on 5V (like say from a USB port or a typical wall wart PSU).  I read at SparkFun Blocks for Intel® Edison - GPIO Block - learn.sparkfun.com that the acceptible voltage range is  3.3v - 4.5v.  Can I get away somehow with the 5V USB supply?  Could I use a resistor?  (that might sound crazy but the wattage, according to SparkFun is < 1W - of course that will vary and that might be the reason why I can't do that)
