I have seen some talk about using Bluetooth for mesh networking but I don't know if it is a software change or a change to the actual physical Bluetooth hardware.
I wouldn't be surprised if there was some kind of 802.15.4 or Zigbee modules that could be easily connected to this thing through a serial port perhaps.
Maybe something like https://www.sparkfun.com/products/10414
According to this article , the Bluetooth group is starting to put this together http://www.pcworld.com/article/2888596/bluetooth-starts-weaving-its-mesh-for-iot.html
And according to the article , I guess the one to look for these days is 6LoWPAN

I've been searching a little bit about this and I found this: IoT - Intel® Edison - adding kernel modules to Yocto* - example "batman" | Intel® Developer Zone in that document mhahn talks about how to install batman-adv on Yocto, and reading here: Doc-overview - batman-adv - Open Mesh, one of the features of batman-adv is mesh networking. Why don't you look at those documents, i believe they'll help you.
