When I try to update the firmware on my board, the task just doesn't complete (I've left it running for over an hour!).
The same happens when I try uploading a sketch to the board. I don't get any error messages and have to close the IDE.
I don't know if the problem is with the arduino IDE or a com port issue.
I've interchanged usb leads and usb ports to no avail.
Occasionally the boards com port is not available to select in the IDE (I presume both issues are connected).
The board worked fine when using an old laptop (Got blinky working).
I'm using a recently built PC running Windows 7 Ultimate 64 bit.
The laptop used was running Windows 7 Home Premium 64 bit.
I also used the exact same arduino IDE folder for both computers.
Any help/advice will be greatly appreciated.
What you are seeing is a known issue as described in section 1.9.3 of https://communities.intel.com/docs/DOC-22797 .
In that document you will find suggested workarounds for both issues. Additionally if you are using any shields, make sure to disconnect them before uploading a sketch or updating the firmware.
