Dell XPS 14 (L421x) + Intel HD 4000 + Windows 8.1 - Brightness control problem

Hello,

I've got the problem with brightness control on my laptop. Now it's only 100% brightness and all methods from this forum or other else doesn't resolved this issue.

When I try to increase\decrease brightness (Fn+F4 \ Fn+F5) - it's changed only in Windows settings (see attached fig.1)

1. Adaptive brightness in Windows Power settings is SWITCHED OFF.

2. When I choose the Default Windows video driver - brightness control works perfect.

3. With Windows 8 and old Intel driver - it was worked, but now it's Widows 8.1)

So, I'm sure the issue with Intel HD 400 drivers. Please help me to resolve!

Configuration:

Dell XPS 14 (L421x)

Intel HD 4000 driver 10.18.10.4061

Windows 8.1 x64

Hi Joe,

Sure, earlier I had installed the driver from support.dell.com -- Video_Driver_VJH9H_WN_10.18.10.3262_A00.EXE

but it's the same issue... As I remember I had no problem with that driver on Windows 8, but now I'm using Windows 8.1... So...

Can you help me?

Thank you.

For the Fn+F4 and Fn+F5 key combination and all other Fn+Fx keys, the problem is not with the graphic drivers but with the Dell quickset app. If it's not installed go to the Dell download site for your laptop and download/install the quickset application.

The problem not in Fn+ keys combination. When I'm trying to change brightness in Windows Power plan menu - seems the same issue, doesn't work... And please read my first message: when I change the 'Display Adapter' settings to Default Windows adapter - the brightness control works perfect!

So, can anybody help me?

I see your system has switchable graphics. It will be better to use the drivers provided by the manufacturer because some of these features are only available with the driver from the OEM. I suggest installing Intel® HD Graphics driver first and Nvidia's (or any other third party) second.

If the issue persists I recommend contacting DELL* for assistance.

I am having the same issue on a Lenovo Thinkpad W540 running Windows 8.1. I updated the Intel HD Graphics 4600 driver to the latest on the site (10.18.14.4080) and still no luck. Going through Charms -> Settings -> Brightness doesn't work nor does the hardware brightness buttons. I am however able to adjust it using the Intel HD Graphics Control Panel.

Sure if you right click on any empty space of the Desktop select "Graphic Properties". Once you do that the Intel HD Graphics Control Panel should open up. Click Display then click on the Color Settings tab. Underneath that you should see the Brightness slider.
