Intel HD 2500 with Dell U2713HM monitor -- blurry text

    L.

I just got a new monitor through my employer. It is the Dell U2713HM. I have it at the recommended resolution (2560 x 1440) and connected with a display port cable, but the text is blurry. This is especially true if I increase the text size via the windows control panel. I have already tried tuning TrueType and tried it without TrueType in case that was better.

I have the Intel HD Graphics 2500 graphics adapter, and I have set the 3d setting to "best quality," as was recommended on one forum I saw to make the text less blurry. I haven't noticed a difference from doing that, though. The driver is up to date. It is from 12/12/2012 and is version 9.17.10.2932.

      I am running Windows 7 Enterprise Service Pack 1, 64-bit. Intel Core i5-3570 CPU @ 3.40 GHz.

I have tried playing with the sharpness adjustment on the monitor itself, but sharpening at 100 just creates other problems with clearly viewing the text. Do people know what can I do to make the text clear and sharp? I would prefer to have the text size increased, but will any increase in text size percentage always be blurry? Would connecting with a different kind of cable help?

I have asked the IT guy here at work but he don't have any additional suggestions.

      Thanks!

Thanks for joining the Graphics community.

This problem appears to be an issue with the quality of the display port cable and also, video driver version.

Please try different video cable and update to the latest graphics drivers.

            Thanks, Allan!

I tried to install the 64-bit driver you linked to. The first time it failed. The second time it also failed but gave the error message about my operating system not being supported. Is this the correct driver for me?

Driver version 3958 for Windows 7 x64 bit.

              File name: win64_153330.exe

                Allan,

I tried to install the driver from the original link you sent me, the new link you sent me, and using the Intel Update Utility.

Using each method, when i run the setup.exe wizard I get the same error:

"This setup program failed to install one or more device drivers. Setup with exit."

Is there another way I should be trying to install the driver?

When I try to update using the Graphics Properties driver tab, I get a message that says that I already have the most up to date driver. But as you can see, it's from 2012.

I just tested installing the latest driver for the same graphics controller; I did not get any issues through the installation. It seems you have an issue with your windows registry. You could try running system restore utility from windows and probable recover the registry to an earlier time and then try installing latest video drivers.

                    Allan,

I was finally able to update the graphics driver to the one you suggested using the manual installation process -- Intel HD Graphics version 10.18.10.3958 for HD Graphics 2500. Unfortunately, this has not had an impact on the blurry text.

                    Any other ideas?

Also, I have a couple of questions about the monitor, which may be outside the scope of the kind of support your provide.

                    Question 1:

I’ve noticed that the monitor is running on the Generic PnP driver:

                    generic-driver.JPG

Is that the correct configuration for this monitor? Or should I be using a monitor driver from Dell? Do you know if that would make a difference?

                    Question 2:

Typically, I would expect an issue like this to be able to be fixed using the “auto adjust” command on the display. But I’ve noticed that the auto adjust feature on the monitor is grayed out (not selectable). Do you know if that's normal?

I have asked these questions of Dell Support, but haven't gotten answers to these questions yet.

                    Thanks,

                    Lacey

Yes, monitor drivers should make a difference, please try Dell U2713HM Monitor Driver Driver Details | Dell US

Blurry text is usually fixed by adjusting screen resolution and monitor settings as you mentioned "auto-adjust", it could be that the option on the monitor's menu will be enabled once you update monitor drivers.

I updated to the Dell Driver for this monitor as suggested in your previous response, but the auto adjust feature is still grayed out.

The Auto mode feature is part of the monitor. It might be that you need to reset factory settings.

I have tried the factory reset several times. It does not enable auto adjust. Looking more into it, auto adjust is supposedly only available when using a VGA connection. However this wasn't true for me when I tried a VGA cable. Auto adjust wasn't available then either.
