Dell Precision M3800 - HDMI output resolution 2560x1440 (Intel HD 4600)

    Bun

      Hi all,

I have a Dell Precision M3800 which i have connected to two DGM IPS-2701WPH LCD Monitors (native 2560x1440 60Hz). The Dell provides two video output ports 1 x mini DisplayPort and 1 x HDMI.

Both monitors will display out the native resolution while being powered off the MiniDP port. However from the HDMI port the laptop will only display to 1920x1080 and nothing higher.

Using a Apple MacBook Pro the monitors work fine using HDMI at the full 2560x1440 resolution. so i know it isnt a problem with the monitor end.

      Things i have tried,

      1. customapp mapping a resolution to 2560x1440 at 30Hz = black screen, and anything higher (refresh rate) - i get a dialog box stating - The custom resolution exceeds the maximum bandwidth capacity.
      2. updated to the latest Dell video driver
      3. manually installed the latest Intel Video Driver

None of these have resolved the issue. below is a copy of the Intel video report, any advise would be greatly appreciated.

      Thanks in advanced

Hi Bun, I noticed in the report you shared that Windows* loads a driver for a different monitor model (Boevt Terra 2760WLED).

Driver for DGM IPS-2701WPH ? - Overclockers UK Forums

You may want to ask the monitor manufacturer for a correct driver.

I also suggest you trying the following:

            Bun

Hi Joe, Thanks for the suggestion on the video driver. I have tried this and in device manager it reports the driver version as Intel(R) Graphics Driver: 10.18.10.3907; which is the one I installed a week ago.

On the driver for the monitor, i think i will be out of luck as i dont think DGM has ever release a driver for any of there monitor equipment.  http://www.digimate.com/en/index.asp

Either way, surely the intel should be reading the EDID value and reporting the correct selectable options to the O/S.

            Cheers

Perhaps you can try escalating the case with DGM. I do not think we are getting the correct EDID since the operating system is not getting the correct monitor model.

You may also try updating Windows* and check for a possible V-BIOS update within the system BIOS.

                @ Manbun

What type of HDMI cable are you using? Is it a High Speed HDMI cable?

                From Wikipedia on HDMI:

As of the HDMI 1.4 specification, these are the following cable types defined for HDMI in general:

                • Standard HDMI Cable – up to 1080i and 720p
                • Standard HDMI Cable with Ethernet
                • Automotive HDMI Cable
                • High Speed HDMI Cable – 1080p, 4K, 3D and deep color
                • High Speed HDMI Cable with Ethernet

                Thanks

                Robert

                  Hi Robert,

I am using a high speed HDMI which i brought specifically for this.

I have also now had my motherboard replaced by Dell, which again hasnt resolved my issue.

                  Thanks in advanced.

                  Man-Bun,

I'm having the same problem as the original poster. I'm using the same monitor (DGM) with the same panel (boevt). Windows downloads the driver, but it's still not allowing full resolution.

However, when using Xubuntu, or other Linux distros, there is no problem with the monitor being recognised and the full resolution being made available. If it is a case of not getting the correct EDID, wouldn't the same problem be found under Linux?

Bumping this thread with some data. I used Monitor Asset Manager to pull this data from the DGM.

                        All

We are working to locate one of the DGM displays. With similar display that I have to test with I am not seeing the issue.

Question, if the DGM is connected only to the HDMI output does it display native resolution? If it is configured as single display in graphics properties does it display native resolution? And is your MacBook running IOS?

                        Thanks

                        Robert

I have also been advised on another forum the problem maybe to do with "HDMI often has a 165 MHz pixel clock limit, but 2560x1440 @ 60 Hz requires 241.5 MHz" - This doesnt explain why RZO is able to achieve the native resolution @ 60Hz using LINUX.... if i set the  resolution to 2560x1440 @ 40 Hz using customresolutionapp i get a blank screen.

Hope with this extra data a solution is found as I currently have two of these monitors side by side with different resolutions.

                          cheers

Hi Rob, I'm going to copy Bun's format for my own response.

Monitor (DGM) - HDMI - Single Display1440pVarious Linux distributions including Debian, Ubuntu and variants of Ubuntu.

I don't have another cable to try HDMI out to DP in, or VGA out to VGA in, so unfortunately I'm not much use there. As you can see extended displays on Windows give me two resolutions of 1080p. Setting the DGM as the only monitor (which disables the laptop screen) under Windows still only gives me 1080p. However, on Linux the full 1440p is doable in both configurations.

If there's any Linux diagnostics you want me to run to see what's different between Windows and Linux let me know and I'll see what I can do.

Is there any news on this?

                                Regards

We are still working on a resolution for the issue. Please watch this threads for updates.
