The FDI or Flexible Display Interface is a connection bus that allows the communication between the HD Graphics controller integrated in the CPU and the the PCH (Platform Controller Hub) of the motherboard. Only the motherboards that offer video ports (VGA, HDMI, DVI, DP, Thunderbolt) have FDI but they are not capable to generate a video signal by themselves. The video reference comes from the GPU of the processor and the motherboard acts as a bridge.
In a few words, a motherboard with FDI needs a processor including Intel® HD Graphics to have video playback.
