It was changed to improve the GPIO speed. The GPIO expander in Gen 1 was removed, now the muxing is done by an SN74LV125A that has the capability you listed.

Thanks, this clarifies the specification. It's been changed for speed rather than "improved drive strength" described in the product brief. It would be great if the current numbers are listed in datasheet.
