    Galileo 2 Bricked

    crossi

I just received my Galileo 2 board and was excited to start experimenting with it. Unfortunately I didn't get too far in using it since it seems that I managed to brick it within the first 15 minutes of use. While following the Getting Started guide one of the steps had me update the firmware, but sadly the update process failed and now I have a non-functional board. To be more specified, the firmware update process started ran for approximately 5 minutes and then reported back an error that the firmware upgrade had failed. After the failed update I now have a board that is completely non-responsive other than the power LED lighting up. I see no other lights turn on and it's no longer detected by the computer when connecting the USB cable. It seems from reading various forum posts that the symptoms my board is experiencing points to corrupted firmware. Unfortunately all the solutions point to the need for an expensive hardware programmer in order to re-flash the firmware. Does anyone know if I'm simply out of luck at this point or if there is a less costly method of fixing my board?

          Hi

From your description of the issue I’d suggest you to try do recovery of the SPI flash. Take a look at this post in there is a tutorial for this procedure https://communities.intel.com/message/240391#240391. Please let us know if this works for you.

It looks like these instructions are for a gen 1 board so I will need to try and make adjustments for my gen 2 board. Does anyone know where I could find the necessary serial cable? Or will I have to attempt to make that myself?

              Hi crossi,

I am using this cable to connect to my Intel Galileo Gen 2 Board.

              https://www.sparkfun.com/products/9717

The instructions were created based on the Intel Galileo Board, although i have followed the same procedure with my Intel Galileo Gen 2 Board. The only difference when following the recovery steps was selecting Galileo Gen 2 instead of Galileo. Everything else was the same. After you board is recovered be sure to update the firmware using the Arduino IDE.

              Regards,

Thanks for the link to the serial cable, I just placed an order for one. Final question for now, can I use the same FVMAIN.fv file that you attached to your Jun 26th post or would I need to go through the steps in the Quark BSP Build doc to create something specified to the Galileo 2?

                  Hi crossi,

I believe just following the steps provided in the link above https://communities.intel.com/message/240391#240391 should work to un-brick your board. Remember to update your firmware after the recovery is complete.

                  Regards

                  Sergio

                    Hi crossi,

The file provided in the other thread was build using an old firmware version. The Intel Galileo Gen 2 recovery mode did not work with that file. I created a new file (attached) using BSP 1.0.1 which has not been validated on the Intel Galileo Board. You can use this file to recover your Intel Galileo and update the firmware via the Arduino IDE 1.5.3 to firmware 1.0.2.

                    1. To do recovery mode, copy the FVMAIN.fv file to a USB drive at the root directory.
                    2. Open a Putty Session
                    3. Remove all power from the Intel Galileo Board.
                    4. Ground the resistor mentioned in section 2.5.4 of the Intel® Galileo Board User Guide
                    5. Connect the power supply to Galileo board

The Intel Galileo Gen 2 Board should detect the file automatically and start the recovery process.

                    Regards,

It didn't work...ran for maybe 30 seconds and then gave an access denied error. See log below:

                        Hi crossi,

If the recovery mode did not work the last resort would be to use the SF-100 Dediprog. Take a look at Fixing a "bricked" Galileo — Clay and Galileo.

This will help you with the process.

                        Regards,

                        Intel_Jesus

                          crossi

To keep the community up to date here's the current status of my Galileo 2 board. I made multiple attempts at restoring the firmware via a serial port which always proved unsuccessful. Then with the help of someone I found with a Dediprog we made multiple attempts at restoring my board. Each update did initially succeed however the subsequent attempt at updating the firmware to the latest version using the Arduino IDE would once again bricked the board. We made these attempts using different PCs (Windows and Mac) and with difference USB cables to eliminate those as possible causes of the failure. I will now be shipping my board to an engineer who will take a more detailed look at what's going on with my board and hopefully be able to finally resolve this issue for me. I'll keep everyone posted on the progress.

                            Update

I was able to recover crossi's board by flashing the firmware using a DediProg. I added the board data to the Flash-missingPDAT_Release.bin file in the Galileo Software Downloads.

If any users are having the same issue feel free to send me a private message and I can build you a .bin file with your board information.

                            Regards,

I received my Galileo v2 and had a similar problem to crossi - the firmware update failed and left me with a bricked board.  I tried to reboot and was unsuccessful, so I've begun a long and arduous process of attempting to recover the board.

                              I followed the instructions here:

                              https://communities.intel.com/docs/DOC-22897

And was able to open a PuTTY session on the Serial port to connect to the board. However, one of the steps in the recovery instructions is to ground a specific resistor. This is identified in section 2.5.4 of this pdf:

                              https://communities.intel.com/docs/DOC-22475

I was able to identify this resistor, but it is a SMT component and difficult to attach to ground. Is there a suggested method for grounding this resistor? I imagine once I am able to do this, the recovery mode will be fairly straightforward.

                              Thanks for the advice!

This was one of the first thing that I tried after bricking my board. I grounded this resister using a jumper wire but I never could get the process to work. I'm not sure if it was because I was not grounding it properly or if this process is different for a gen 2 board. After having no luck with that I found someone with a DediProg but even had trouble going down that path. I finally ended up shipping my board to Intel_Jesus to have him flash it for me.

Yeah I figured you went through this. I didn't want to PuTTY in without a semi-secure jumper between the resistor and ground. I just don't trust myself to hold a wire on there for the duration of the connection.

I'm experiencing the same issue. Update failed. I followed the procedure and was able to get it into recovery mode. But I receive the same Access Denied message when it attempts to flash. I don't have a Dediprog available so I don't know how to proceed from here.
