How to turn on D945GSEJT using regular PSU.

I'm a little puzzled how the Intel designers have intended for a system based on a D945GSEJT mini-itx board to be turned on with the power switch on a regular micro-atx case. I understand that, without using an external adapter, power is supplied by means of the ATX12V 2x2 power connector, without a regular 20-24 pin ATX connection. How, in that case, does the system turn on with the case's power switch? Some people already seem to be resorting to potentially unsafe homebrew solutions (from THIS article) and I can't help but think that there has to be a better way...
