How to identify a CPU chip uniquely?

Greetings! I would like to know how I can identify a particular CPU chip uniquely. In other words, I don't just want to know that the chip in my computer is an Intel (R) Core(TM)2 Duo processor; I want to know the unique serial number for that chip (so I can differentiate it from another such chip).

Searching through the software developer's manual and the community shows that this could be done in the Pentium(R) or older processors using the "CPUID" instruction. However this capability doesn't exist in later processors.

So, how can I do this for more recent processors?

      Thanks.
