How to access internet through WIFI? Where to find some instructions?

    Wang_Xin

Hi, Could I ask Galileo players' help?

I am beginner of Galileo, I have several things on my hand,

      • 1. a Galileo board
      • 2. a mini PCIe card: Intel® Wireless WiFi Link 4965AGN
      • 3. a firmware file: iwlwifi-4965-ucode-228.57.1.21.tar (But I don't know where to put it?)
      • 4. a SD card in Galileo board. (Galileo board could boot from SD already)

I want to know how to use these things to access internet through WIFI. Where can I find some instructions?

      Many thanks!!!

By the way, I tried example "WiFiWebClient" error message "WiFi shield not present"

          Hi Wang_Xin,

I don't know which image you use. But if your image has iwlwifi you probably already have the correct firmware installed.

You may check in a Linux console:

          # lspci -k | grep -A 4 -i network

01:00.0 Network controller: Intel Corporation Centrino Wireless-N 135 (rev c4)

Subsystem: Intel Corporation Centrino Wireless-N 135 BGN

            Kernel driver in use: iwlwifi

            Kernel modules: iwlwifi

If it lists your adapter than you are fine. In general following adapters are supported by iwlwifi according to Download Center

          Intel® Centrino® Advanced-N + WiMAX 6250

          Intel® Centrino® Advanced-N 6200

          Intel® Centrino® Advanced-N 6205

          Intel® Centrino® Advanced-N 6205 For Desktop

          Intel® Centrino® Advanced-N 6230

          Intel® Centrino® Advanced-N 6235

          Intel® Centrino® Ultimate-N 6300

          Intel® Centrino® Wireless-N + WiMAX 6150

          Intel® Centrino® Wireless-N 100

          Intel® Centrino® Wireless-N 1000

          Intel® Centrino® Wireless-N 1030

          Intel® Centrino® Wireless-N 105

          Intel® Centrino® Wireless-N 130

          Intel® Centrino® Wireless-N 135

          Intel® Centrino® Wireless-N 2200

          Intel® Centrino® Wireless-N 2200 For Desktop

          Intel® Centrino® Wireless-N 2230

          Intel® Dual Band Wireless-AC 3160

          Intel® Dual Band Wireless-AC 7260

          Intel® Dual Band Wireless-AC 7260 for Desktop

          Intel® Dual Band Wireless-N 7260

          Intel® PRO/Wireless 2100 Network Connection

          Intel® PRO/Wireless 2100A Network Connection

          Intel® PRO/Wireless 2200BG Network Connection

          Intel® PRO/Wireless 2915ABG Network Connection

          Intel® PRO/Wireless 3945ABG Network Connection

          Intel® WiFi Link 1000

Intel® WiFi Link 5300 and Intel® WiFi Link 5100 products

          Intel® WiMAX/WiFi Link 5350 and Intel® WiMAX/WiFi Link 5150 products

          Intel® Wireless WiFi Link 4965AGN

You can find the installed firmware on your image by typing:

          $ ls /lib/firmware/iwlwifi*

in your console. Probably your adapter is listed there

I don't know "WiFiWebClient". However, from the error message "WiFi shield not present" I guess it looks for a WiFi shield. However, the WiFi adapter you use is a PCIe adapter.

You can set it up on Linux to access a hotspot e.g. as I described on my blog WiFi access on Intel® Galileo with Yocto* Linux, or as an access point as described on my other blog

Using Intel® Galileo as access point

            Hi Wang_Xin,

I am not 100% sure your wireless card will work with Galileo, since you have the driver lets give it a try. Take a look at this blog by Sergey, Intel Galileo Meets Wireless. He provides step by step on how to install the driver. You will need a USB to 3.5 mm stereo plug, you can buy a USB to RS232 and RS232 to 3.5 mm adapters or build one following his instructions here: Intel Galileo - Introduction - Malinov Family Web Presence.

By the way, I tried example "WiFiWebClient" error message "WiFi shield not present"

Intel Galileo does not use the Wi-Fi shield instead it uses the mini PCI-E port, the error appears because the driver for your wireless card is not properly installed or the wireless card is not being detected at all. Once you follow the steps to properly install the driver and the card is being detected correctly. You will be able to run these sketches without the error. If the card does not work properly on Galileo i would recommend getting a Intel Centrino Wireless N-135 since the driver is already installed on Galileo.

            Regards,
