Galileo - communicating between node.js and the arduino sketch

I have a question regarding best practises on the Galileo.

On the linux side of my Galileo, I've got a node.js process running that is listening to a socket server. When the socket server sends a message to the galileo, I need to trigger an action in the arduino sketch.

I currently have this working by having node.js write the status to a file in /media/ram (I made the very big assumption that this is a ramdisk that I can use). The arduino sketch reads this file 5 times a second and responds to it. This, of course, seems very kludgy to me. Is there a better way to have processes in linux trigger actions in arduino?
