Why build hardware to be used once and thrown away?

When I opened my DC3217IYE box today the Intel melody was played. I wondered, investigated, found a little circuit with a loudspeaker, micro controller battery and photo sensor attached to the packaging and became _very_ angry.

Which Intel employee had the unbelievable great idea to waste all this resources just to play the melody _once_? Can you please send him or her to a 4 week vacation at Accra: Children on the frontlines: the e-waste epidemic in Africa

or into the civil war zones of the Congo where most of the resources for this device probably come from?!?!

This stuff was build to play a melody once and then to be thrown away?!?! Really? m( Green IT my ***!
