I have had a lot of freeze/hang issues running Ubuntu 13.10 on this NUC. After some debugging and research I was able to realize that my issues where related to GPU issues and more specific the MESA driver ( Mesa (computer graphics) - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia ).
Recently (as of writing) the "Intel Open Source Technology Center" ( 01.org ) released a updated driver that bumped the MESA driver from 9.2.1 to 10.0.0. This update has resolved my freezing/hang issues and is available at: Intel(R) Graphics Installer 1.0.4 for Linux* | Linux Graphics . This is has resolved a lot of frustration for me. Hope this is useful for other users out there!
