>>Temperature of the system has been stable. Hovers around 60 degree. High, but I read some where that this is normal for this NUC system.<<
My NUC also maintains a temp at around 60C. I have read on different forums where the CPU will shut itself down if it gets to hot in order to protect itself. I also have asked on this board as to what is the normal temp for the NUC, no answer.
Boffins on this board change their BIOS as if it were of little consequence?
Note: " Update the BIOS on your computer only if the newer BIOS version specifically solves a problem you have. We do not recommend BIOS updates for computers that do not need it. You can view all new BIOS fixes in the release notes."
Regarding the BIOS update, I didn't read what the new BIOS version fixes. My NUC kept crashing in the beginning. I read one posting suggesting to update the BIOS (didn't say if it was to fix any issue), so I did it. And the new BIOS did address my crash issue. It was working fine since then, until the last crash which dropped my mSATA port.
I changed the fan speed, at close to 4000 RPM, it could only bring the temperature down to around 55 degree, and the fan's noise was getting more audible.
I did read that the CPU would shut down when it gets too hot, which I understand. However, I don't think it would drop the mSATA port entirely. If the hard drive overheated, I assume the mSATA port would still exist.
I figured out the problem. Turned out it was the temperature that shut down the mSATA SSD.
After giving up and waiting for response from Intel Customer Support, I unplugged the power cable from the box. Five days later, when I was going to do some tests on it, I powered up the system, and this time it booted into Windows 7.
The difference I noticed was the box was a lot cooler compared to the last time I touched it. Somehow keeping the power plugged in made the box warm.
I increased the minimum duty cycle of the fan, as described on this article:
So far the system has been holding up. I am checking with Intel Customer Support if I need a thermal pad for the SSD. Also need to figure out why the box stayed warm with the power cable plugged in.
