I can't answer your question directly, but choose your SATA DOM wisely. We've been using them here where I work in SuperMicro servers and we see TONS of failures.
Is there a reason not to use mSATA?
no special reason, I already have a mSata ssd. But if there is a further sata port, why not use it. However the small place left in the kit would only allow a sata dom element which is small enough...

I am afraid the hardware compatibility list does not show compatible data for your component, you will need to check this type of information through the manufacturer of the SATA DOM component.
