these drives you posted are too old. they don't work with ICH9.
The driver you are currently downloading is the F6 driver which you use if you are using RAID. If you are using a single hard drive, there is no need to use this driver. It should be used only when you are configuring Raid.
But a point to note when installing windows xp is that the installation disk has to have at least Service Pack 2 included. Without at least SP2 you will never be able to install Windows XP. If you do not have SP2 included, you can download it and slipstreamed is as well using nlite.
Also remember to properly configure the boot priority to cd, initially so that you can boot though the cd and install the OS then afterwards you can set it to the hard disk. Also you may check that the hard disk is either unpartitioned, or fat32 formatted or ntfs formatted, other file systems will not be recognised by windows. Most preferably is better if you leave the hard drive unpartitioned if you do not have any data on it.
Hope this will be helpful to you.
my guess is that he will need the updated driver since from what i have seen, OEM system with ICH8 and ICH9 normally have the BIOS configured in AHCI mode by default or its AHCI and you can change it at all (especially HP systems).
I have now installed XP using the link for the driver provided by OJ, many thanks OJ! But the prob now is that i cant boot Vista, which after searching a bit, i see is common sometimes when installing XP etc. I believe all i need to install is Easy BCD. So i am going to give that ago. Unless anyone knows differently.
