Just wanted to report, I'm having this problem as well. Was attempting to use in a Lenovo ThinkPad X220 tablet (4294-CTO) and the laptop originally came with an Intel 320 series 180GB SSD (Lenovo factory part).

I installed a new 530 series 240GB (for a customer) and it experiences this same exact problem--the SSD is not recognized by BIOS when restarting (warm reboot), but works fine when cold booting, booting from hibernation, resuming from standby. OEM SSD was on firmware DC02 from factory, and I updated it to DC12. I believe it had the same problem while on DC02, but can't recall.

Strangely, I noticed the drive is detected if I have a USB flash drive connected during reboot, but I'm still not able to boot to the SSD (Lenovo's boot device selection screen displays, and it just reloads near instantaneously when trying to select the SSD).

I was thinking it was a Lenovo issue but didn't try in any other laptops (didn't have time yet, but I will test more later). I work in an IT shop so I have access to several different brands/models of desktops and laptops old and new.

Hi, I'm a colleague of mstoica who is further investigating this issue; unfortunately this seems to be a compatibility issue with the combination Intel QM77-chipset and LSI SandForce SF2281-controller equipped SSDs. Not using AHCI or cold booting every single time is the only workaround currently known, to us at least.

The problem is, if you've installed your OS with AHCI enabled, you'll need to boot into safe mode and manually change the driver of the controller to a basic/standard IDE controller before turning AHCI off, otherwise you won't be able to boot.

** WARNING ** The instructions above are for advanced windows users only (and a big problem voor Mac-users), so I really hope there will be either firmware-updates for the ssd's or BIOS-updates for affected notebooks to enable use of AHCI without the detection loss. Also disabling AHCI removes the use of features like TRIM (and Garbage Collection too I believe) which will have an adverse affect on SSD-performance.

As for us, we've escalated this with HP, a spare notebook with SSD is on it's way for their techs to examine.

            Hi Interlace84,

As Joe_Intel mentioned, we have tested this on a couple of HP systems mentioned here and could not recreate it.

It's very helpful that you've escalated this with HP.  I would like to follow-up with your escalation contact at HP.  I will contact you via Private Message.

            Thanks.

Same issue as everyone else 530 Series SSD 180 GB and 240 GB in HP 8470P - requires a power cycle instead of a reboot.  Same workaround switch to RAID.  Problem traced to Intel Rapid Storage Technology which gets installed sometime during driver setup in imaging process updates IDE ATA/ATAPI Controllers driver to Intel 7 Series Chipset Family SATA AHCI Controller.  Uninstall it will make the problem go away too....

Previously using 520 Series with no issues.

I have installed a Intel SSD 530 in to a HP Elitebook 2540P and have experienced the same problem.

I have the same problem with an HP Elitebook Folio 9470m and an Intel 530 240GB SSD running the latest firmware. Fortunately I noticed it after the initial load of the OS. I've changed to IDE/Legacy mode and am reloading Win7 now. Hopefully this will fix the issue.

Stew, would you please post a picture of Device Manager showing the hard drives section after you uninstalled the Intel® driver? Do you also know the IRST driver version by any chance?

After removing Rapid Storage Technology it looks like the image below.  I believe the version was 11.1.5.1001 but I have tried downloading the latest version direct from the Intel site, 12.8.0.1016, and it behaved the same - unable to reboot

I am having the same problem with a Macbook Pro and a 240-GB SSD 530 which shipped with the latest (DC12) firmware.

Mac shows the "prohibited" sign* at startup after restart.

At that point, If I shut down by holding the power key pressed, and then boot again, it works.

Mac OS X 10.8.5, clean install.

Exactly the same problem and behaviour for HP EliteBook 8540w with Intel 530 Series 180GB drive.

SSDSC2BW180A4, FW DC12, HP BIOS version F.23, HDD in AHCI mode, Windows 7 Pro x64 (6.1.7601).

Having the same problem with HP Elitebooks 8470p with Windows XP and Windows 7 SP1.

                            Running BIOS F.43 (July 2013) and F.42.

HP thought the problem was because we are still running Windows XP, so I formatted and loaded Windows 7  (we are going through the Windows 7 upgrade in a couple months).

Our solution?  Because this is used in an Enterprise Environment we returned the Intel 530 series SSD for the 520 series.  We have used the 520 series for over a year and no issues.

                              Hi Joe,

I'm sorry but you're going to have to be alittle patient since i'm out of town for the remainder of the week, You said you've tested this on multiple HP systems; can you confirm that any of these were equipped with the Intel QM77-chipset? Any other model with any other chipset does not exhibit the issue. I also want to explicitly repeat that not only Intel SSDs have this issue; unfortunately it seems like every one out there with the SF-2281 controller combined with the QM77-chipset are having the issue.

Someone hinted at the RST or Intel SATA conbtroller-driver to be a possible cause of the issue; i'm reaching here but maybe it's a bug related to SATA Link-State power management; if the SSD is shut off at shutdown, and not able to reset (in time) with a warm reboot, it will have to be power-cycled to be able to operate again.

                                Hi All,

I've just received another Lenovo - an E330 and a 530 SSD - Same issue with this one but i can also confirm that switching to Compatibility Mode in the BIOS is a workaround. Fwiw - CPUz Reports this as an HM77 chipset.

Same issue here on HP Elitebook 9470m with 530 240GB.

                                  Bios version; 68IBD F.46

                                  BIOS Date: 07/16/2013

                                  SSD Serial number: BTDA3310016W2403GN

                                  SSD Firmware version: DC12

After a hot restart. SSD is not found (Error message: Boot Device not found. Hard Disk - (3F0)

SSD is not found when running a Hard Drive check (not installed).

Doing a new hot restart or ...five does not help.

Doing a cold restart -> directly into bios -> CTRL +ALT + DEL -WORKS-.

This does not look like a driver issue, since the drive disappears before the OS loads. It looks like a timing issue. The 9470m bios has no apparent HDD time delay or similar functions.

We are an enterprise environment and have used more or less every kind of Intel SSD in HP laptops. We just started switching from 520 to 530 since it was getting harder to find 520's and the 530's where a bit cheaper. We have now this issue on every Elitebook 9470m.

It might be worth mentioning that we have TPM activated.

Interesting -- Replaced 530 series with 320 Series (older drive) works great and no problems with multiple warm restarts.

Agree with post 41 -- appears to be isolated to the Intel SF2281 controller on the SSD 530 Series and QM77 Intel BIOS.

We just switched to the 530 series as well since the 520 was not available.
