I would say this must be related to the integration, like a false contact or incorrect connection.
Just in case reset the BIOS to default settings but otherwise you may want to verify the integration.
...Or it could be the Wake-On-Lan function receiving a magic packet from the local network or the internet (if connected without a router in between). Try disabling WOL in the BIOS.

thanks both for responding, my gut feel is the oken might be right... my nuc has never been connected via network cable, where as my sister's is... i pulled of the lan cable and it hasn't switched itself on since. stupid question, where is the BIOS?
