Need Help!
I got a H87 motherboard with CPU i5 4570 , Windows 8.
I tried to connect to Dell 27" U2713HM monitor by hdmi, but I cannot set the resolution to 2560x1440.
I have double check the motherboard manual which said it support up to 4k by hdmi.
and I upgraded the Intel HD graphic driver to the newest version.
But I still could not set the resolution to 2560x1440.
In the Intel graphic control panel and Win 8 resolution setting, it only show up to 1080p in the resolution pull down menu.
I could only selection resolution up to 1080o only.
Would anyone can help me, how can I set the resolution to 2560x1440, which should be supported by the Intel HD 4600.
Thank all for the help
Jacky

Hello Kevin,
Thank you for your reply.
I am using Single Display.
But I also tried the Clone mode and Extended mode with two monitors.
However the results are the same.
I am not sure it is hardware problem or software problem.
Hope someone can help me.
Thank you very much
Jacky

I'm having exactly the same problem - Intel HD 4600 on Dell U2713HM via HDMI doesn't offer resolutions higher than 1080p.
My mainboard is a Gigabyte H87N-WIFI, which clearly specifies 4K resolution via HDMI (but not DVI). The display features HDMI 1.4, which should enable higher resolutions.Yet I'm limited to 1080p.
Where is the custom resolution option in the Windows 8 driver panel? I saw it mentioned several times on other forums, but it doesn't seem to be there on the current driver version.

It refuses to work on my machine as well - I have a Z87 mobo with i7-4770K and it is connected with a DVI-D cable to my Dell U2713HM, and when I try vacaloca's linked manual configuration using 2560x1440 @60Hz + 8bits/underscan 0%/timing GTF, the driver pops up a box saying:
Intel(R) HD Graphics Control Panel
The custom resolution exceeds the maximum bandwidth capacity.
I tried varying the color depth (there is no 24-bit listed?) and the timing dropdown with nothing working. If I reduce the refresh to 30Hz with 16-bit color it lets me add the custom resolution, but even that took... I don't know: waiting? twiddling lots of controls? Several minutes before it showed up as an option.
This is after installing the driver from Gigabyte's website (mb_driver_vga_intel_64_8series.msi) because before that Windows thought 1024x768 was the max resolution! I'd also installed Dell's drivers.
If I look at the Screen Resolution... > Advanced Settings, it says "Intel(R) HD Graphics 4600". Then I click [List All Modes] it says that 1920x1080@60Hz@TrueColor is the maximum it supports!? Also says:
1696MB total available graphics memory
64MB Dedicated Video Memory
What did you guys do??
If an Intel Graphics report would help, let me know how to do it.
Thanks!

Just to clear things up: Meanwhile I found the solution: The Intel HD4600 isn't the issue, for all I know it can output 4K just fine via HDMi (but not via DVI). However the Dell U2713HM will only accept resolutions of up to 1080p via HDMi, for larger resolutions like the native 2560 x 1440 you'll need to use DVI or DisplayPort. This is of course a problem with the output specifications of my mini ITX Board, which is why I went for a small dedicated Geforce GPU which gives me 2560 x 1440 via DVI just fine. It's kind of a sad state though - my Gigabyte board has 2 HDMI and 1 DVI out and all of them are useless - at least with this very Dell display. And don't bother with Pre-Haswell boards either, I was shocked to learn that larger than 1080p is quite a new thing for onboard GPUs.
THat said be sure to double check your display and mainboard specifications. Or if it's too late already, buy a cheap dedicated GPU.

For anyone who hasn't seen this other thread yet, it explains how to set custom resolutions on the latest Intel HD graphics hardware:
Some users in another thread on Dell forums -- http://en.community.dell.com/support-forums/peripherals/f/3529/t/19503186.aspx U3014; problems getting full performance through HDMI - Monitors Forum - Peripherals - Dell Community reported success via HDMI using a Dell U3014 @ 2560x1600, 16 bit, 60Hz, 2560x1600, 32 bit, 24Hz, 2560x1600, 32 bit, 36Hz, 2560x1600 32bit 48Hz, and even 2560x1600, 32 bit, 60Hz with CVT Reduced Blank (CVT-RB) timing. See the thread for details.

I have the same problem with the resolution.
Only i have 2 screens on win8.
Screen 1 : on HDMI - 1920x1080
Screen 2 : on DVI-D - Dell 2711 - max res 1680x1050 / 1600x1200
I tried to override the resolution using CustomModeApp.exe (with 2560, height 1440, 60 Hrtz, 32 bits, GTF) but i get the following responce
'The entered resolution expaned the maximum bandwith' (it's a translation from dutch, wont bore you with the original).

Dell U2713HM suport 2560x1440p only with DP and DVI-D DualLink
Intel 4600 suport 2560x1440p only with HDMI and DP (if is available onboard).
So DP is the only common option for 2560x1440p !

Is it a possibility to use a cable with DVI-D (dell side) and HDMI (computer side)?
Or doesn't this work

Maybe, but I think it's a very little chance to work with a mix cable DVI-D(DL)-HDMI (1.4), DP cable will work 100%.
But even with DP cable I have a problem. My Dell U2713HM don't go on stand-by. The screen is black, but not off, the led from the display and audio (AX510) are on. I think this could be a driver problem.
Next week a will return my DP cable and I will buy another one ( to eliminate a cable problem) and in this time I will try/search few drivers vers.

Same issue here although I was able to get 2560 x 1440 @ 40Hz, 32 bit, CVT-RB to work using CustomModeApp.exe. It would be nice if it would just work without the hack though. I can't change the color depth at all even using the custom tool.
Monoprice 27" IPS monitor (supports 2560 x 1440 @ 60Hz)
New HDMI cable from Monoprice that supposedly supports 4K
Win8
Newest Intel Graphics drivers
i7-4770K
ASRock Z87M Extreme4
I have another older 17" monitor connected via DVI @ 1280x1024 - extended not cloned
edit: no sound through HDMI though...

I almost solved my problem.
I let Windows search for new drivers and came up with a standard UPNP driver.
Then opend 'intel HD graphics control panel' and the option 2560x1440 40p Hz was availeble.
For now i am happy, outcome could be better at 60Hz.

Jard,
At this point you are saying you were able to get the resolution by "hacking" the software. Have you tried using your monitor that supports 2560 by 1440 (60 Hz) in single mode?
Dutchie,
Can you also confirm if the configuration you have is extended or clone? If you are using clone the max resolution you will get is 1920 by 1080 based on your monitor specifications. Can you also try the system with the monitor that supports 2560 by 1440 (60 Hz) in single mode?

I have the same but worse problem.
I have 4770K and MSI Z87 XPower (BIOS V1.1 lastest) motherboard and Crossover 27Q-P LED display.
So, I connect my display, which have only DL DVI input, to HDMI port on the board I/O panel with HDMI to DVI DL cable.
When my system passes the POST and loading windows I see only black screen and see back-light LEDs blinking due to windows loading.
At the welcome screen a picture appears but max resolution is only 640x480 8bit.
I even didn't try to solve problems in windows, because I need BIOS setup working and displayed at least.
Is that problem arise due to my monitor and what should I do?

Hi physics2007,
The Intel graphics controllers do not support DVI Dual Link. My best recommendation is to test a different monitor with DVI Single Link and with a straight connection.
