    Cannot create raid volume

    dennydiver

I have upgraded to version 11.5.0.1207 and now I cannot seem to create my raid 5 on my 4 1.8tb drives. I was able to create my raid 0 for my two SSD boot drives but now it keeps telling me I have reached my maximum number of volumes even though it shows the four drives as non raid drives. I did have them configured before this last install but now I just cant get them to work.

Any help or suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

      Thank you

      Denton

Test by going to the Intel(R) Rapid Storage Technology control I option ROM and reset all non hard drives. To do this, use the option that says "Reset Disks to Non RAID". Then boot to the operating system and try again.

I have already done that and then had to restore my hard drives that I do have setup on raid 0 but stioll back to the same spot and the four drives still say non raid hard drives but I have found that the controller driver that I have been told to use crashes windows explorer and hangs up my system and just will not work for me and that driver is JBM36X_V117582_XP/VIZT/WIN7 so that may be part of the problem but I cannot find another that will work with my bios  3603 and IRST 11.5.0.1207

            Thanks

That appears to be a JMicron driver which is not managed, controlled and has no relation with the Intel(R) Rapid Storage Technology SATA controller.

What is the model and manufacturer of the system that you are using?

Additionally, please provide the system report generated by Intel(R) Rapid Storage Technology. To get this report please use this article:

The system that I am using is a custom build that uses an ASUS motherboard because I could not get an Intel board with some of its features at the time, it uses an I7 3.4mgh with SandyBridge chip and 32g memory.

From what I can see in the report, the SSDs are set to be as a Recovery volume. When using recovery volumes, you are not allowed to use other types of RAID structures such as RAID 5 or RAID 10 in the system. (In some system =s the option for RAID 5 or RAID 10 is actually hidden when recovery volume is enabled).

In this case what you may do, would be to set the recovery volume as actually a RAID 1 and then try again. And, disable "Recovery volume" in your system BIOS if this is an option in the SATA modes of your system BIOS.

As you can now see I have successfully created a new raid 5 disk and it is 26% initialized so far and that may be the reason that I cannot get it to come up in my storage management as one drive or see it in my windows explorer (computer) as of yet and it still shows up as two drives as explained.

When I open the computer and look at my hard drives it does not show up and whenever I go to storage management it shows that I do have two volumes in the same drive one is 2048.00gb and one is 3541.04gb but I cannot do anything with them except change the small one to a simple volume. I have tried this three times and done so in different ways but nothing changes. so  I only end up with one raid volume of a little over one tb.

In IRST window it shows that the raid 5 is functioning normally and looks good so I will have to wait for it to finish and see what I have then.

                    Thanks

                    Denton

Could you please provide screenshots of what you are seeing once the initialization process has been completed?

At least provide screenshots of the Intel(R) Rapid Storage Technology manage tab and the Disk Management tool in Windows* Administrative tools (To open this, right click on "My computer", then click manage)

OK I sure will as soon as it finishes initialization of the system which will probably be Sunday but I will have it for you by Monday morning and I want to thank you for all of the help so far.

                        Thanks

This is what I now have after finishing the Initialization and every thing seems fine except I cannot see my raid drive on my computer view. But now when I right click on the (Disk 1) in computer management view I now have the option of converting to a (GPT Disk), but I have never done this before and do not know the ramifications as of yet. I am trying to do the research now>

                          Thank you

In fact, that was exactly what I wanted to confirm. The RAID volumes are properly reported by Intel(R) Rapid Storage Technology. The issue is in Windows* disk management.

Go ahead and use the option to convert the disk to a Dynamic disk or GTP drive, as your operating system may not recognize a volume larger than 2 TB when using MBR.

Diego I want to thank you for all of the help you have given me and for the time that it took you to do so as I really do appreciate it. That is what keeps me coming back to the Intel products is the great quality and support.

But with that said I now think that your part of this problem has been solved and you no longer owe me anything else in help but I want to ask your opinion of just what I should do now as I have no knowledge in this although I am trying to educate myself and if you choose not to answer I understand and thanks again.

I cannot assign a drive until I do something such as convert these drives to either a simple, striped or spanned volume. The raid 5 option is not available and it is now set to unallocated and I just don't know which option to go with or how to proceed. I have converted my 5tb to a GBT and it did consolidate that one to one drive but it still needs something And of course my C: drive is still the same in three different  pieces and I cannot convert it into something and my inclination now is to go with a simple volume and be done.

                              Thank You

In this case the option to go is "Simple Volume", it will threat all the space on that big "drive" as a single volume.

Keep in mind that Windows* disk manager does not see this as a RAID 5 or any other kind of structure, it only sees one big logical drive. Hence the need of using this as a dynamic disk.

More details on the functions of each of these options are available at:

                                  my drives now.jpg

OK this is what I have now and I am very happy with my E:\ drive as it is just what I used to have.

But my concern is with my C:\ drive and as you can see it is now a dynamic drive and is still a raid 0 in IRST.

It is now in two segments with one 101mb unallocated, and one 238.38gb and this is after I extended the volume, which seemed to combine the two 119gb segments into one. This would be great but I suspect that I no longer have a mirrored drive with fault tolerance and that is not good for me even though I love the extra space on my boot drives. What I would like to know is does (IRST) take care of that inside of its software or do I indeed no longer have the fault tolerance of a (Raid 0) and if so how do I go about getting back to my two SSD drives becoming fault tolerant as in mirrored drives again. and having one visible C:\ drive and all of the available space into one contiguous drive.

                                  Thank You

As from what I see on the report, when you disabled the system as a recovery volume, the SSDs were configured to create a RAID 0, instead of selecting RAID 1 (keep in mind that even though Recovery volume use the same RAID 1 technology, its is not the same as selecting or configuring RAID 1).

At this point, there is no fault tolerance for that volume using the SSDs, and reverting this back to a RAID 1 implies deleting that RAID array and creating a new one which will require an operating system re-install
