Intel 945GM - Extended Desktop no longer working

dwilcock Community Member

I have an HP dv6000 laptop with the intel 945GM graphics adaptor, running windows XP.

Originally I Vista machine, I have had XP running on it well for over a year or so, and the exteneded desktop aspect worked very well.

Last week XP decided to throw a wobbler on me & eventually had to reinstall it.    Unfortunately, now the extended desktop doesn't work any more, and I very much need it for the work I do.

I am currently using the 945 drivers from your intel site, and have also tried the XP drivers from HP, and laterly - in some desperation - the Vista drivers for my machine from HP.    I've tried uninstalling the drivers, rebooting, and then re-installing, but with no success.  The "Dual Display Clone" option works fine from the Intel "Graphics Properties..." dialog, but the extended desktop option does not.

Ideas or suggestions welcome.  Is there a utility that more effectively uninstalls graphics card drivers so that I could get back to a "virgin" install of your 945 drivers?

Thanks for any help,

Duncan.

What's also very puzzling is that the "dual desktop" display works just fine, but the extended desktop does not.

I am also experiencing the same problem.  This has always worked before but, for some reason, has now stopped working.  Has it been broken by a Microsoft Update?

Here's an output of the Intel Graphics Media information:

Good Idea to post the Video Information.  I am pasting mine below:

I don't think mine was a windows update, although I couldn't rule that out for certain.  For me it happened when I had to wipe & reload the machine,  including windows & all other updates - last week - 19 or 20th May.  It had worked the week before that - for certain on the 12th of May.   The machine itself is an HP Pavilion dv6247ca Laptop.  Here is the information from the intel drivers:

I have the same problem on a Dell D530 with the GM965 chipset. About three weeks ago the extended desktop quit working, I use it everyday and on power up one day I only had one monitor. Installed the newest driver from Dell, that didn't fix it. Installed the newest driver from Intel, that didn't fix it. Re-installed the newest Dell driver. Below is video info as well. I have tried system restores, upgraded to XP SP3, updated everything else I could think of, BIOS, etc.

Also in the picture below you will notice that the message "Can't find requested string." displays where the tabs should be, when in the extended desktop mode. Tabs display properly in any other video mode

I am having the exact same issue on a Dell D630,  with the 965 Chipset on XP Pro.

Extended desktop was working fine this morning,  I unchecked extend desktop to run-around town, came back (have not even powered off, been in hibernation) and I could not recheck extend desktop.   Nothing I have been able to do has been able to restore the functionality.  Uninstalled drivers/monitors/adapters from Hardware manager.  Reinstalled drivers from both Dell's site,  and slightly new versions directly from the intel site, as well as trying the older version from Dell that was still in my drivers directory on the laptop.  Tried on/off docking station (both of which worked before this morning in multiple locations).  Control panel changes slightly with different versions,  but all exhibit the same problem.  No updates that I can tell occurred recently.    All attempts/variations of three different driver versions have failed (registry cleans/reboots in between attempts) and all have the same problem.  All of the intel control panel versions also have the exact same scenario as described in other posts here with the missing strings of text,  and  Mirror display works,  second display only works,  extended does not,  and the  'Cannot find not string. and cannot find string.' verbiage appears in the Intel video manager when extended display is attempted.  All other modes work,  and do not contain that string.   I even tried to manually install the drivers from the driver directory and bypass the intel mgt. ap/install hoping to get to the point of allowing windows to directly control the extended desktop feature w/o the ap 'in the way'..... but it installed the intel mgt. software anyway.

Windows display manager immediately unchecks the 'extend my display' checkbox and reverts back to showing the 2nd monitor as unused.  The intel manager appears to set it up, nothing displays on the second monitor,  and if you close/re-open the control panel,  it has reverted back as well.

    Hopefully.. somebody figures something out....

Same exact issue on an HP TC4400 tablet.  Everything had been working fine (I've used extended docked everyday since buying the machine 2 years ago wihtout problem!) until about a week ago.  I've re-installed drivers to no avail.  Something systemic seems to be going on.

INTEL, I hope you are listening and can offer us a solution soon!!

I got in touch with Intel support last night who referred me to Dell support and advised me to download the latest monitor driver.  I've tried the later to no avail.  As it also seems to be happening on a HP laptop it doesn't seem to be Dell related...

This is starting sound systemic indeed.

The answers here reflect exactly my original scenario (that is still not resolved)  - the "Can't find requested string" symptom and the immediate unchecking of extended desktop in the windows display properties dialog.

I used the online form to email directly to intel support with a link to this thread, but no response as yet.

Intel - are you out there?  Can you at least acknowledge the issue and let us know you are looking into a solution for us?

Judging from the number and speed of the responses, and extrapolating to the number of people who aren't actually taking the trouble to post about it  - there must be many more people out there with this issue.

Eagerly awaiting some assistance and/or communication from you Intel....

    Duncan.

FYI I've been in touch with Dell support and they have tried a few things (via remote diagnostics) to no avail as yet.  They have suggested I perform a system restore.  Unfortunately I won't be able to perform the restore this week so I'll try a few more things.  Very strange and very frustrating...

I've tried installing old drivers, installing new drivers, all resolutions, backed out IE8, etc, etc, with no success as yet...

I have a Dell D620 that also was working fine with two monitors in extended desktop mode.  Then it just stopped.

I have a few more clues to add.  On mine the second monitor's display settings seems to always default back to 640x480, 8-bit, 60Hz, after I hit apply.

I also get the "Can't find string" error message in my config tool.

One other point that may or may not be releivent is, I have reciently started using hibernate, which has caused some issues when I hibernate undocked using the laptop's LCD and then dock the PC where I have two large external LCD screens.

    Intel please help

I can add that my wife's HP TC4200 Windows XP tablet is having the same problem, so that's now two machines in the family independently affected by the same problem at about the same time.

I've been using hibernate almost daily for months without problem, so I would tend to rule that out as a cause.

Since so many computers more or less simultaneously and independently lost extended desktop functionality (and thus far this cuts across brands as we have people reporting the same problem on Dells, HPs and Fujitsus) one might might hypothesize that it might be due to a bad interaction between the Intel graphics driver and an updated windows component.

But I just checked my windows update history (go to http://update.microsoft.com/ and 'review your update history').   The last update I made was on May 23 and it was for the single entry: "Update for Microsoft Silverlight (KB960353)".  I'm pretty certain that my extended desktop problem pre-dates this update however, and my previous windows update was on April 4th and I'm quite certain that that extended desktop was still working just fine in April. So I remain puzzled.

I also did not touch the graphics drivers until the problem appeared.  I've since tried moving back to an older driver and re-installing the most recent from the HP support site for my specific laptop model.  No solution.

I finally received a response from Intel support suggesting that I try installing the newest generic Intel driver and if that didn't work, pointed me to a old generic Intel driver to try. Even though I went thru this exercise previously, I tried it again and still nothing. Of course, they also pointed me to Dell for support even after I pointed them to this discussion several times. It may take more people actually submitting a support case to get them to realize this is a bigger issue then just one manufacturer.

We have hundreds of the Dell laptops, so this could get bad for us quick.
