Screen goes blank when starting windows 8 media center using Intel HD 3000 graphics only on HDMI

I'm trying to update my media center PC to Windows 8 Pro. It's been happily running Windows 7 Ultimate since it was built last year. Details:

•Intel 2nd Gen Core-i5 2500K

•Intel HD 3000 integrated graphics

•Biostar TH67+ ver.6.1 motherboard

•Samsung 8 series plasma (1080p)

I first tried an in-place upgrade but ran into issues with the HDMI output. Everything works fine via VGA, but when using HDMI, starting Windows Media Center results in the screen going black and the TV reporting "No Signal". If I plug VGA back in (and unplug HDMI) I can see the following logged in the Event Log:

Since then I've done a completely fresh Windows 8 Pro install (many times), updated the motherboard BIOS to latest, tried three different video driver versions (Windows in-box, Windows Update, and latest from Intel site) and the problem persists. I've also tried various BIOS settings for the integrated graphics (multi-monitor support on/off, reserved system memory size, etc.).

Note I've tried multiple cables and inputs on the TV also, all of which work fine with other devices. When using HDMI, I can see POST screen and Windows loading screen fine, as well as login and start screen/desktop. Starting Windows Media Center causes the issue.

From the error logged it appears to clearly be a driver issue and links on the Intel forums seem to suggest others having similar problems (http://communities.intel.com/message/149058# 149058 http://communities.intel.com/message/149058# 149058)

As I said, this machine was working perfectly fine as my lounge room media center PC running Windows 7 for over a year 24/7.

I've run Windows Media Center for over seven years now, all custom builds, and am at a complete loss. My assumption is this is just bad driver support from Intel for Windows 8 but hoping somebody can point me in a new direction.

I've just tried this on a different monitor and confirm the issue happens there too. I've also confirmed that the DVI port works fine, it's just HDMI that the issue is with.

It appears the plugging in the HDMI causes dwm.exe to crash (immediately, don't even need to start media center now). I captured a crash dump and analyzed it and the stack trace shows that the display type change is detected and a call is made to VerifyGraphicsCapabilities which fails, hard. See below:

Thanks for the info Damian. You're currently using the 2867 driver which is not the latest - but you might have already tried our LATEST-latest regardless. Either way, I'll provide that here; Download Center

Additionally I checked your motherboard manufacturer's website and found this driver (2792) which is not the latest, but may be the best fit for your system. The version on the motherboard website is for Windows 7/WDDM1.1 (hence 8.x version number) and fails to install (error message saying the system does not meet the minimum requirements). Trying the latest from Intel downloads now.

It could be that your motherboard manufacturer does not yet support Windows 8*. They may have to release a BIOS update specifically for supporting it. I would try contacting them to get their official statement on it.

I have this exact same issue when using a Core i3 and an asus p8h67-m evo.

Issue persists regardless of the driver I use. I can open media center on a DVI monitor but when i connect it via HDMI to a TV the screen just goes blank.

I have the latest motherboard firmware installed.

Same Issue with my HTPC based on Aus p8H67-m evo.

I am using a beamer with HDMI cable. As soon as full screen is activated, black screen. It makes the bling noise like changing some Hardware or plugin some graohic device.

Audio still is ok. I am using a Monitor as second display, this monitors goes also blck when changig to full screen on the HDMI beamer side. Full screen on the Monitor (DVI cable) works fine.

Don't know the exact differences between a P8H67-M and mine, which is a P8H67-I PRO but I also am experiencing the exact same problem.

My situation is as follows:

* TV: SONY KDL-40V5500 supporting 3 HDMI inputs, VGA (PC) and some old crap connections.

* AMP: SONY BDV-IZ1000W

* Mainboard: ASUS P8H67-I PRO (it has 3 video outputs: HDMI, DVI, VGA)

* Memory: 2 GB

* Video: Intel HD Graphics 2000 (Core i3-2120)

HDMI audio and video connects to TV through the amp (because the TV cannot pass signals newer than Dolby Digital 5.1). It is connected to HDMI1. The DVI and VGA connections are not used.

This system was built several months ago and Media Center has been working on Windows 7 Ultimate without even a glitch giving a great experience. All audio formats work well.

Now on to the Windows 8 horror.

I was very pleased to see that everything worked smoothly,until I installed Media Center.

Running Media Center in full screen does 2 things as far as I found out so far:

1. It messes up the inputs of the TV (at least the HDMI ones)

2. It sends Media Center output to the VGA output (which isn't connected).

If I connect a VGA cable between my mainboard and the TV and then switch to the VGA input on the TV, I see media center running perfectly in full screen on that input.

If I ALT+F4 out of Media Center the VGA connection gets killed again (most of the times), but returning to the HDMI input still shows nothing. Once I switch of the TV (and implicitely the amp) and switch it back on, my desktop is once again showed on the HDMI input. Sometimes it is enough to switch to another HDMI input which has nothing connected and *then* switch back to HDMI1.

I have been mixing and matching with several driver versions but am currently "stuck" at Microsoft's latest WDDM drivers provided by Windows Update.

Before someone starts suggesting it: switching to VGA is not an option, because I lose all audio and HDMI appears to be a lot crispier.

Hope this helps investigating the problem further.

I, too, do not get a video signal when using HDMI out to my TV. I've experience this issue with 2 different motherboards. As a side note, I have always been able to get a video signal when using the VGA adapter.

My current setup is:

TV: Panasonic TH-50PZ750U

Processor: Intel 2nd Gen Core-i5 2500K

Graphics: Intel HD 3000 integrated graphics

Motherboard: Asus P8Z77-M Pro

OS: Windows 8 Pro

My previous configuration was identical, with the exception of the motherboard, which was a Biostar TH67+ ver.6.3 motherboard running Windows 7 Ultimate (64 bit). HDMI out work without issue on Windows 7. I only started experiencing the problem after upgrading to Windows 8.

When I initially upgrade my PC from Windows 7 to Windows 8, and after I switched motherboards, I was briefly able to get a signal on my TV (not sure what the video driver version was), but an auto update change the driver & the issue returned. After trying many different version, I decided to do a clean install of Windows 8, but that didn't help.

So far I've tried the following Intel GMA Driver Versions:

9.17.10.2768

9.17.10.2828 (this came from the Asus P8Z77-M Pro download site)

9.17.10.2867

9.17.10.2875

9.17.10.2897

Currently, though, I'm using v9.17.10.2768, because with this version I was at least able to get a video signal when using HDMI with an Acer S232HL (analog) display. It's worth mentioning that although I was able to get a video signal using the Acer display, it wasn't 100%. By that I mean there were a few strange behaviors, such as:

- Upon rebooting or cold boot, the display does not receive a video signal immediately; it cycles through all of the input interfaces (VGA, DVI, etc.) a couple of times because there is no video signal.

- After cycling through all of the display interface multiple times, the display eventually receives a video signal on the HDMI port & it display an image.

- At this point, Windows 8 has booted and the first image to appear on the display is the Start Screen.

- Obviously, with this behavior it is nearly impossible to enter the BIOS screen because the display receives the video signal too late.

This is after I install v9.17.10.2897 again, because v9.17.10.2768 wasn't working properly after restart; the Acer display would work for a few seconds and then a "No signal" message would display. I re-installed v9.17.10.2897 remotely (although I could still see the Acer display); when the installation complete, even before restarting, the Acer display started working. At this point I re-ran DxDiag. However as soon as I rebooted, after displaying the Windows 8 logo for a few seconds (after POST, but before the Start screen), the "No Signal" message was display. Back to square one...

I have the same problem, not just in Media Center but in any application that does fullscreen rendering like games. If I use HDMI and run Media Center fullscreen my TV screen goes black with no signal. To recover I have to unplug the HDMI cable from the TV and either connect to another monitor using DVI or VGA or remote in using VNC. From there I can put the app in windowed mode by hitting Alt+Enter and then reconnect the HDMI cable.

Windows 8 64-bit UEFI

Asus P8H67-M EVO Motherboard with BIOS ver. 3602 (latest at this time)

Intel Core i3-3220T with graphics driver 9.17.10.2932.

Previously I was running Win7 64-bit UEFI and it was fine. But, I was running an Intel Core i3-2100 instead if that matters.

Sorry for the delay on getting back to this thread, we're working on a number of black-screen issues currently. I would like to gather some more information from everyone in this thread though, so we can verify all the proper troubleshooting has been done on our end.

For starters, I would like everyone to download both the latest version of the VGA driver provided by your OEM/motherboard manufacturer. If that doesn't work, then try our latest provided driver for your system (.2932). Let me know if either of those worked or not.

@Damian: What did your OEM say about Win8 support? Also, what display were you using?

@darth_duane: What display are you using? Are you using an AV/R? Can you check with a different HDMI cable on the same display? Also, please provide a copy of your dxdiag (Start -> Run -> dxdiag -> Save All Information) Copy & paste here please, and provide the make/model of your motherboard OR OEM system make/model name.

@A.N: Please provide the same info I've asked of darth_duane.

So far I've identified that Damian Edwards and jack have systems that do not have win8 support. This may potentially be responsible for your black screen.

The monitor I'm using is a Samsung TV connected directly using an HDMI cable. Don't believe the issue is the cable or the TV because I've tested with my laptop that has a Core i5-2467M (.2932 driver from Intel site) running Win8 64-bit and it's fine.

My motherboard OEM (Asus) doesn't have a Video driver for the board yet. It seems like they will support Win8 because they have a few beta drivers for other components (just not the graphics). It certainly seems that it could be a problem on their end so I'll get in touch with them about the issue.

I too am having this problem on one HTPC and will not upgrade another until it is resolved. The system is configured as follows:

Gigabyte GA-H67MA-UD2H

Intel I5 2500

Samsung 8000 series TV

Marantz NR1402 AV Receiver

All connections are HTMI routed through the Marantz

Have tried two different HDMI cables, both of which are ver 1.4.

All worked fine under Windows 7. Now screen goes blank immediately after launching MediaCenter. While the pattern isn't clear I am sometimes able to get back to Win 8 desktop by switching input momentarily on Receiver, pressing Alt-F4 to close MediaCenter and then swiching input back to HTPC (Aux1). Unplugging/re-plugging hdmi cable from Samsunf also works after the Alt-F4. I have installed the latest VGA drivers from both Gigabyte's site and Intel's slightly newer build of version 9.17.10.2932 with no improvement. Gigabyte site seems to indicate they expect Win8 to work fine with this build however they likely did no testing with Mediacenter.
