Intel HD 4000 freezes my computer

I have Windows 8 and Intel HD 4000 graphics. The driver version is 9.17.10.2867. When I try to play a game in full screen it freezes my whole computer. Does anyone else have this problem? And is there a way to fix it?

i'm having this problem aswell i think it's becuase of the new driver update that came out about a week ago. cuz i formatted my pc and installed windows 8. everything worked fine as i tested 3dmark03, unigen heaven and played a few games but when i later updated the graphics from intels website then my pc wouldn't start any game. As soon as the game starts everything would freeze and i would have to force shutdown the pc.

Same with me. Everything worked fine with the default driver, but when I updated to the latest driver it crashes my PC when I play games. It also forces me to hold the power button to shut down.

Hi agonizing and motorcross11,

We've released a more updated driver than the one you are currently using. http://downloadcenter.intel.com/SearchResult.aspx?lang=eng&ProductFamily=Graphics&ProductLine=Desktop+graphics+drivers&ProductProduct=3rd+Generation+Intel%C2%AE+Core%E2%84%A2+Processors+with+Intel%C2%AE+HD+Graphics+4000/2500&ProdId=3498&LineId=1100&FamilyId=39 Download Center

Go ahead and give this one a try, let me know if you are still experiencing the same issue.

Thanks,

-Nic

Hello everyone,

I am using the latest driver from the website, but am experiencing the same issue.

Hope that everything can be solved as quickly as possible.

Thank you,

Romeo

Edit: I should note that I'm running Windows 7 (x64), and the problem cannot be reproduced on Ubuntu 12.04 with the latest driver stack (so it's not a hardware problem).

I'm having the same issue. I am also running Windows 7(64). And I can't even play a game. When I try to log into a game(if it lets me get that far). As soon as I input my login information and hit the enter button, my computer locks up, freezes and I get a loud humming sound from my speakers. Most of the time I can't even get to the login screen. As soon as the game loads up, FREEZE!!! I then have to do a hard reset, because I can't do anything else. Just recently I was trying to watch a youtube video and in the middle of the video I crashed to desktop. No warning or anything. This is just bad and I hope someone does something about it.

Everything runs fine for me, except full screen 3D applications. When run in windowed mode every game I tried runs flawlessly, Windows Aero runs very well, Youtube/Flash videos run great in 1080p.

If I can supply any other information please let me know.

Thank you,

Romeo

The new driver didn't correct anyones issue it seems.

@agonizing:

-What games are you running specifically that are causing the crash?

-How much memory do you have?

-Which CPU are you using?

-Does your game(s) work with the 2761 driver?

-Is your Win8 32 or 64 bit?

@motorcross:

-Are you only experiencing this issue with games? (which ones?) Or are you also seeing it using non-game applications like unigen heaven?

-How much memory do you have?

-Which CPU are you using?

-What operating system are you using? Also, 32 or 64 bit?

-Do you have this issue with the 2761 driver?

@Romeo Colata:

-What games are you running specifically that are causing the crash?

-How much memory do you have?

-Which CPU are you using?

-Do you have this issue with the 2761 driver?

-Can you verify that you are only experiencing this issue when in full-screen on games?

@nycalpha:

-What games are you running specifically that are causing the crash?

Guild Wars 2

The Witcher 2

Dishonored

World of Warcraft DX9/DX11

Unigine Heaven DX9/DX11/OpenGL

-How much memory do you have?

16GB 1600MHz

-Which CPU are you using?

Intel® CoreTM i7 3770K

-Do you have this issue with the 2761 driver?

Yes

-Can you verify that you are only experiencing this issue when in full-screen on games?

Yes. All the above games (haven't tested Unigine) run flawlessly in windowed mode. Also World of Warcraft (with WINE) and Unigine (native) run fine (low FPS but still) on Ubuntu 12.04 in full-screen using the latest graphics stack (http://intellinuxgraphics.org/2012.07.html Intel Linux Graphics: 12.07).

Hope the info helps sort out the problem.

I am running World of Warcraft, Diablo3, Guild Wars2, Rift, and SWOTR. All in full screen mode @1920x1080p. I have 16GB of ram 1600mhz, i5 3570k, and windows 7 home premium. It all started with the 2761 driver first. Then I updated the driver, twice and the same thing is happening. I have not run 3dmark03 or unigen heaven.

@Romeo Calota:

-I forgot to ask, what OS are you using? Also, 32 or 64 bit?

@motorcross11:

-What games specifically are you having issues with? Guild Wars 2, Diablo 3, other?

@nycalpha:

-Is your OS 32 or 64 bit?

Also, can either Romeo or motorcross give me more background information on Unigen Heaven. What is it, what does it do, and where are you experiencing the issues with it?

Thanks again!

I'm running 64 bit and no cames work for me. They all do the same thing. Freeze up my computer, and now I noticed random crashs to desktop. It first started while I was watching a video on youtube. Then as of yesterday it happened while I was on a regular site.

I'm using Windows 7 64bit.

Unigen Heaven is just a demo of the Unigen 3D game engine. With Unigen, same as with the other games, my computer instantly freezes when the loading screen appears, and I am able to recover only after a hard reset of the PC.

Thanks for the info everyone, and thanks for the info on the Unigen Heaven Romeo. Was this game/app also experiencing the problem as far back as 2761? Or did it work with 2761 and broke afterwards?

Thanks,

-Nic

Hello Nic,

I don't remember trying Unigen on 2761, but since all the games I've tried locked up I don't see why Unigen wouldn't .

Thanks for the great support, keeping my fingers crossed that the issue can be solved in the next update.

Hi everyone. I wanted to provide an update on the status of your issues;

So far the following games/apps have been tested; Dishonored, Diablo 3, Rift, SWTOR and Unigen Software. They were tested using the hardware/software specifications provided by the users, and using all available drivers for the past 4 revisions. Unfortunately, they were unable to reproduce the issues you guys are seeing. We haven't given up on helping you out though so we've got some more things to try!

@Romeo: You stated you are using an Asus P8Z77-V LX. Can you try updating your BIOS using the latest update from ASUS? Here's a link; http://www.asus.com/Motherboards/Intel_Socket_1155/P8Z77V_LX/# download ASUS - Motherboards- ASUS P8Z77-V LX

@Sheng: The work-around you are using sounds an awful lot like the issue we had several months ago with Memory Reference Codes. (See here: ">

@fantassin: Try updating your BIOS to the latest version (2.40) from here; http://www.asrock.com/mb/Intel/Z77%20Extreme4/?cat=Download&os=BIOS http://www.asrock.com/mb/Intel/Z77%20Extreme4/?cat=Download&os=BIOS

@everyone else: We want to make sure everyone has updated their BIOS to see if it has any impact on the issue you are experiencing; mostly because the folks we had testing out these games had the latest BIOS versions for their respective systems; and did not experience the same issues.

Let me know what results you get. Thank you,

-Nic

Hello Nic,

I've done some further testing after updating the UEFI. Now WoW, Syndicate, Guild Wars 2 run in full screen just fine. On the other hand The Witcher 2 and Battlefield 3 do not run in full screen, only in windowed mode. Battlefield 3 has some weird square shaped artifacts sometimes on the top of the screen in windowed mode.

Hope this helps and if you need any further info let me know,

Romeo

Hi guys,

I thought I'd jump on this thread as I am having similar problems too.

My games on fullscreen freeze and the computer becomes unresponsive. If games are windowed then I see the notification after black screen that the intel graphics driver has failed and recovered.

i5 3570k OCed to 4.6Ghz

Intel Drivers: 9.17.10.2875

Asus Maximus V Formula (bios: 1309)

2x4GB 1600 Corsair Vengeance CMZ8GX3M2A1600C9

Windows 7 64bit

I have tried some solutions I've come across. Bios and driver updates to both mobo chipset and intel graphics. Removing one stick of ram, which did give me extra play time but the games still eventually froze. Trying different dimm slots. Taking the overclock off and returning to stock speeds. No joy with these fixes.

I'm getting a gtx 680 in a few weeks but it would be nice to use the system which I invested my hard earned money in.
