Memory speed for a Core i7 processor

I'm looking at a Core i7 940 processor, and I'm wondering if it matters which speed of DDR3 memory I purchase. If I buy memory at 1333 or 1600, will it still default to 1066? Is the answer the same for the Core i7 965?

What is the maximum frequency for DDR3 memory when used with Intel® Core™ i7 desktop processors?

These processors support DDR3 memory with a maximum frequency of 1066 MHz. If faster DDR3 memory is used (such as 1333 MHz or 1600 MHz), it will be down-clocked to operate at 1066 MHz.

What are the Intel® Core™ i7 desktop processors DDR3 memory voltage limitations?

Intel recommends using memory that adheres to the Jedec memory specification for DDR3 memory which is 1.5 volts. The Intel® Core™ i7 processors should not be used with DDR3 memory that is rated for voltage over 1.65 volts. Anything over this voltage can either damage the processor or significantly reduce the processor life span.

Hi Tangelo,

What motherboard do you have in your system?

For now, looking at the DX58SO. Based on the previous post, I see the 1066 limit for the non-extreme parts.

Thanks all!
