GFXui.exe keeps crashing in Win8 (Release Preview)?!

GFXui.exe always crashes when accessing Advanced mode. Works fine in Basic.

I've tried:

- Drivers versions v2761 and now v2867.

- Completely uninstalling and installing again.

- Installing by updating drivers through device manager and .exe installer.

- Run as Administrator

- Run in compatibility mode.

Have used the same downloaded files on my Win7 install (same system) and it works perfectly.

So what gives?

Can you provide more information on what is happening during the crash? Any error messages? Can you also provide some system information?

-What's your display adapter?

-Are you using Win8 32 or 64 bit?

When you say you completely unistalled/installed again, are you referring to the driver or the operating system?

The error is the standard "GFXui.exe has stopped responding. Windows will close the program" (or something to that effect).

Referring to the driver being uninstalled/installed.

I haven't updated to the RTM/Retail version as yet, so unable to check if that fixes the problem.

We don't validate on the Release Preview any longer. I am not seeing the issue on the RTM or the retail version. My suspicion is that it is a compatibility issue with the RC as it was not code complete.

I am facing the same issue on a Win 8 64-bit retail version that was downloaded (2 days ago) and upgraded over a Win 7 Premium 64-bit. Each time I attempt to start the "Graphic Properties", GfxUI.exe fails and gives me the error message. This is also usually followed by an WerFault.exe or dw20.exe failure message. I think one of the side effects of this issue is that my external display is cutting off the screen edges in full native resolution mode (1920x1080). My hardware specs:

Intel i3 M380 with HD graphics

4GB RAM

I am also facing a problem. I always get this "Gfxui has stopped working." I have Intel HD Graphics (Pentium). I also can't find any drivers for my graphics card. In the Intel downloads section, I can see that there is an option to choose my graphics but there is no download option.

I was able to resolve my issue by uninstalling a bunch of older apps that were installed back in WIndows 7. Since this was an upgrade to Win 8 instead of a clean install, one or more of the older apps were conflicting with some of the newer drivers. Intel Control Center was one of the apps uninstalled as it was throwing an error each I time I ran it. Also removed were some of the Lenovo apps that were not running as expected in win8.

I am now able to get into "Graphic properties" and fix scaling, which was earlier causing the screen edges to be cut out.

Bottom line: Anyone doing a clean install of Win 8 will likely not experience this issue.

I haven't upgraded from Windows 7 x64 to Windows 8. I have done a clean install. So, I doesn't have any of the previously loaded apps and drivers.

@Robert_U I have run a scan with the Intel Driver Update utiliy. It shows that I have the driver version as 8.15.10.2858. But I can't find a proper driver for my Graphics of Pentium Processor. In turn, I have to use the driver for Intel Core processors. I think this is the main problem.

Though there is a link to get drivers for Intel Pentium processor with Intel HD Graphics but In the downloads section, there is no download link. Please help me.

My System Manufacturer is HCL (its from India). I also checked at their driver downloads section but the problem is that the driver which they have is not complete. In the driver pack, there is not setup to install it. So, I can't get it from there.

The main problem with my Intel HD Graphics card is that it doesn't gets to the normal clock whenever I play Counter Strike. I am also having Need For Speed Most Wanted and whenever I play this, Its gets to its normal clock that is 543 mhz. But, in case Counter Strike, it remains at its idling clock that is 373 mhz.

Please can someone tell me a way to get my problem solved.

@nic I am having series 55 of HCL ME Laptop. A strange thing happened to me. Yesterday, My graphics properties started in the Basic Mode. No gfxui error in the Basic mode and Wizard Mode, but in Advanced mode the same problem appears.

I also figured out the problem of GPU idling clock when playing Counter Strike. Whenever I run the game on 1024 x 768 or 1280 x 720, the Gpu remains at its idling state that is 373 mhz, But when I run it at 1600 x 1050 or 1920 x 1080, the Gpu clock goes upto 676 mhz. The game when on low graphics runs very laggingly (30-40 fps) but when on high resolution, It runs very smooth (80-100 fps). Please nic and Robert_U can you solve my problem.

Did you run Windows Update after you installed Windows 8? The only Intel HD Graphics driver for your chipset will be available on Windows Update.
