Hi,

I would like to know how 2-quad core processors can be connected together to make it an 8-core processor?

You need to have a server motherboard that has 2 processor sockets, so you can install 2 processors on the same server board, the operating system will decide which core to use for any required task or application.

Usually desktop motherboards support only one physical processor at a time.

Hi,

But I saw some servers which have around 40 cores (Dell). How do they connect these many processors? Are the motherboards stackable??

Intel server system have up to 2 sockets, the maximum number of physical cores per processor is currently 10 cores, and those processors supports Hyper-Threading Technology, adding 10 extra logical cores per processor, so that will make a total of 20 physical cores + 20 logical cores = 40 cores, this is on Intel server systems.

It is possible that third party server manufacturers have serve board with more than 2 sockets, but you will need to check with them, you can also ask them if they are using any clustering system.
