If the system is expecting a fan there, and sees none, it ramps up the other fans on purpose.
According to the back of the QSG at Intel Workstation Board S5000XVN — Quick start guide [PDF], the system is looking for a 92-mm fan there.
Thanks for your help. I'm wondering why it's looking for one there now...it never did
before. This is the one of the first S5000XVN motherboards on the market and I
got it as soon as it was available. Needless to say, I've had the system for quite awhile and I've never had a problem like this until now. Could it have something to do with the BIOS?
Not the BIOS, but the FRU, which is part of the same firmware update package.
What are you using to pull air in through the front of the chassis?
I'm not using anything. The specs on my chassis (5299DP) call for only one fan. The drive bay is upgradeable to a 6-bay hotswap cage, but I've never needed more than two drives. It looks like I'm going to have to study up on updating the FRU then. I've done BIOS updates in the past and I remember somthing about FRU, but I can't remember what its all about.
Thanks for your help.
